Cependant toute l'esquisse qui précède aurait manqué son but, si nous ne la complétions par quelques remarques sur les travaux des derniers temps et du moment actuel. Nous avons vu l'Italie à deux reprises dill'érentes marcher à la tête du progrès en anatomie patholo- gique; pendant le premier tiers de notre siècle, c'est la France qui a presque exclusivement donné à son tour l'impulsion, quoique des hommes d'un mérite incontestable aient contribué aussi à ces progrès dans d'autres pays. Pour bien comprendre ce qui va suivre, il est nécessaire de jeter un coup d'œil rapide sur le déve- loppement de la pathologie moderne en Allemagne. Un vitalisme exagéré avait envahi tous les esprits jusqu'au moment où la philosophie de la nature a commencé à dominer la pathologie aussi bien que les autres sciences, et les écarts d'imagination les plus désordonnés, les vices de méthode les plus déplorables en avaient été la conséquence. Cependant malgré les errements auxquels ils ont conduit, ces deux ordres d'idées n'ont pas été tout à fait infructueux. Ces excentricités même de l'imagination et de la pensée ont contribué à donner une heureuse impulsion aux esprits et à les porter vers l'observation sévère des faits.
