One type of immigrant building that fails to show up in the Sanpete Valley is Danish half-timbering. 36 In this type of wall construction, the heavy box frame is infilled with unfired brick or woven willows packed with clay (wattle and daub). Half-timbering was the typical framing method in both Denmark and southern Sweden during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, though its use appears to have been declining in rural areas by the middle of the nineteenth century as brick everywhere became the most popular walling material. 37 It seems likely that Danish 272 |
