The house was t y p i c a l l y s i t u a t e d on t h e c o r n e r o f t h e l a r g e home l o t n e a r t h e s t r e e t i n t e r s e c t i o n , so t h a t f a c i n g e a c h i n t e r s e c t i o n was a c l u s t e r o f f o u r h o u s e s , one i n t h e c o r n e r o f e a c h l o t s e t b ack a b o u t 35 f e e t from th e s tre e t. A long t h e s t r e e t f r o n t a g e b etw een e a c h h ouse were g a r d e n s , o r c h a r d s , o r p a s t u r e ( F r a n c a v i g l i a , 1970, 23) and f r e q u e n t l y a row o f Lombardy p o p l a r s . L o c a te d i n th e i n t e r i o r p o r t i o n o f e a c h hom estead were t h e numerous o u t ­ b u i l d i n g s a s s o c i a t e d w ith b o th t h e home and t h e farm economy. E v e ry f a m i l y , r e g a r d l e s s o f i t s o c c u p a t i o n , owned i t s own h o r s e s and a few cows, p i g s , and c h i c k e n s . The v a r i o u s o u t ­ b u i l d i n g s a s s o c i a t e d w ith k e e p in g t h e s e a n im a ls were found on a l l h o m e stea d s i n e v e r y s e t t l e m e n t . Even i n S a l t Lake C i t y , b e f o r e t h e a u to m o b ile a g e , t h e r e was a b a r n o r two b e h in d e v e r y h o u s e . On t h e nonfarm hom estead s a l l o f t h e s e b u i l d i n g s were r e l a t e d t o t h e home economy, b u t on t h e farm h o m e stea d s which a r e i n t e r m i n g l e d i n t h e v i l l a g e w ith th o s e o f t h e n o n f a r m e r s , some o f t h e o u t b u i l d i n g s were r e l a t e d t o t h e farm economy o n ly an d te n d t o d i f f e r from t h e o t h e r s i n fu n c tio n and s i z e .
