Some i m p o r ta n t m o d i f i c a t i o n s o c c u r r e d b e f o r e th e Utah p e r i o d and some d u r i n g t h a t p e r i o d . The o ld New E n g lan d " I " h o u s e , f o r ex am p le, r e a p p e a r e d i n w e s te r n New York i n the e a r l y 1 8 0 0 s, b u t i t s o r i g i n a l m a ss iv e c e n t r a l chimney had g iv e n way t o a c e n t r a l h a l l and i n t e r n a l end chimneys ( G l a s s i e , 1968, 1 2 9 ). The s a l t b o x , t o o , went West w ith New E n g l a n d e r s b u t i n t h e p r o c e s s y i e l d e d i t s l a r g e c e n t r a l chim ney t o t h e one on e a c h g a b le en d, o r i t s a s y m m e tr ic a l r o o f l i n e was evened u p, p ro d u c in g t h e l a r g e f o u r - o v e r - f o u r u s u a l l y w i t h a c e n t r a l h a l l and i n s i d e chimneys p a i r e d on t h e r i d g e ( G l a s s i e , 1968, 1 2 5 ) . F u r t h e r ch an g es o c c u r r e d as New E n g la n d e r s b u i l t t h e i r h o u s e s a lo n g t h e s o u t h e r n s h o r e s o f t h e G r e a t Lakes and a s G reek R e v i v a l became a f a s h i o n a b l e s t y l e ( K n i f f e n , 1965, 5 5 9 ). The "T" f l o o r p l a n s , f o r i n s t a n c e , e s p e c i a l l y t h a t w ith a s t r e e t - f a c i n g g a b l e , became p o p u la r i n t h e Mohawk V a lle y and n o r t h e r n Ohio i n t h e 1830s and were d e f i n i t e l y known t o t h e Mormons t h e r e a t t h a t tim e (Newcomb, 1 5 4 ).
