Show Figure 152: Tongue notch corner timbering on an Ephraim granary, c.1860-1870. The tongue notch is characterized by an internally interlocking dovetail joint that is invisible from the outside. The tongue or tooth which projects from the bottom of the otherwide square notch is dovetailed into the top of the log just below it. This notch is found in Finland, Sweden, and Norwary, but nowhere as a common form, particularly during the nineteenth century when the full dovetail notch gained supremancy throughout much of the Scandinavian region. In the United States, the tongue notch has been recorded in Wisconisn and Minnesota. 268 |
