Show Then suddenly, in April 1865, the Civil Wrar was over and the picture changed dramatically. The transcontinental railroad was abuilding, and before long it was more expensive to get Dixie's cotton or factory goods to markets in Salt Lake City than it was from the defeated South. The venture to freight goods up the Colorado River was promptly abandoned by Mormon merchants in Salt Lake City.
