In these areas the venerable dwelling form was a type of longhouse which contained both house and barn. 45 The specific origins of the Sanpete types XXXIX-XLIII are found in a Palladian-inspired version of the pair house which was introduced into both Skane and Denmark during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. If the Renaissance legacy to Anglo-American tradition was the Georgian house, its contribution to Scandinavian folk architecture was a lar9e classically appointed triparite house that became the principal dwelling form found on large estates (herrgard) during the eig hteenth century (figure 118). 46 This mansion-type house was distinguished by its symmetrical facade and the presence of a large room in the center of 222 |
