The s i z e o f t h e hay b a r n v a r i e d a c c o r d i n g t o t h e n e e d s and p r o s p e r i t y o f t h e fa rm e r: some were 18 f e e t w id e , 50 f e e t lo n g , and 25 f e e t h i g h , b u t s o g r e a t was t h e v a r i a ­ t i o n i n s i z e s t h a t no s p e c i f i c s e t o f d im e n sio n s c an be reg ard ed as t y p i c a l . The s h a p e , how ever, was more c o n s t a n t , b e i n g t h a t o f a r e c t a n g l e w i t h a r a t i o v a r y in g be tw ee n 1 :2 and 1 : 3 .
