The n o n i n t e g r a t e d f a m i l i e s had s e p a r a t e h o u ses f o r each w ife and h e r c h i l d r e n . Sometimes t h e s e h o u se s were a d j a c e n t t o e ac h o t h e r , b u t f r e q u e n t l y , e s p e c i a l l y d u r in g t h e f e d e r a l r a i d s , e ac h h ou se was i n a d i f f e r e n t n e ig h b o rh o o d o r even i n a d i f f e r e n t community m ile s away. The n o n i n t e g r a t e d polygamous f a m i l i e s had no e f f e c t on house ty p e form o r any form e le m e n ts ; t h e i r ho uses w ere i n d i s t i n g u i s h a b l e from t h o s e o f t h e monogamist m a j o r i t y . The i n t e g r a t e d p l u r a l f a m i l i e s managed w i t h a l l or most members under one r o o f . A l l h o u s e h o ld d u t i e s and a l l "day rooms" were s h a r e d i n common— th e c o o k in g was done i n one k i t c h e n and a l l d in e d t o g e t h e r — and i n some c a s e s a l l o r most of t h e c h i l d r e n s h a r e d one or two l a r g e bedrooms u p sta irs. But b e c a u s e each w if e had h e r own p r i v a t e bedroom, an i n t e g r a t e d f a m i l y o f f o u r o r more w ives r e q u i r e d a v e ry l a r g e h o u se . The l a r g e s t example o f a polygamy house i s Brigham Y oung's " L io n House" i n S a l t Lake C i t y which p ro b a b ly ho u sed more t h a n a dozen o f h i s w ives and numerous c h i l d r e n (G o e ld n e r, 3 1 ) . The L io n House, w ith tw e n ty bedroom s, each o f which h a s a g a b le d dorm er, i s h a r d l y t y p i c a l o f Mormon f o l k h o u s in g ( o r o f polygamy h o u s e s ) e x c e p t i n i t s symmetry. I t was w ise f o r a husband t o a v o id a l l a p p e a ra n c e s o f f a v o r i t i s m ; t h u s he to o k a d v a n ta g e of symmetry i n o r d e r t o p r o v id e e q u a l l y f o r e a c h w i f e .
