The t h i r d lum ber b u i l d i n g p hase began b e f o r e t h e t u r n o f t h e c e n t u r y i n most o f t h e Mormon r e g i o n and was c h a r a c t e r ­ i z e d by a s i g n i f i c a n t s t i m u l a t i o n i n lumber u sage and t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n o f frame h o u s e s and o t h e r b u i l d i n g s . The l o c a l lum ber y a r d s began t o im p o r t p r e c u t lum ber o f s u p e r i o r q u a l ­ i t y from th e P a c i f i c c o a s t , n o r t h e r n Id a h o , and M ontana, b r i n g i n g th e i n e v i t a b l e shutdow n o f most l o c a l l y o p e r a t e d saw m ills.
