The l e v e l ab o v e, s t r i c t l y r e f e r r e d t o a s " t h e g r a n a r y , " was f o r th e s t o r a g e of ite m s n e e d in g p r o t e c t i o n from m o i s t u r e , e s p e c i a l l y w heat u s e d by t h e f a m i l y , b u t som etim es t h e r e were s e p a r a t e b i n s f o r o a t s an d b a r l e y , i f t h e r e was no p r o v i s i o n e ls e w h e r e f o r t h e s e a n im a l g r a i n s . Meat was a l s o s t o r e d i n th e g ranary, e s p e c ia lly in w in te r. Cured ham, p o rk , and smoked b e e f were wrapped and b u r i e d u n d e r t h e g r a i n ( A lle n , 87) o r hung on t h e w a l l s . E a r l y I n Utah h i s t o r y , some g r a n a r i e s were u sed t o smoke t h e m eat; i n f a c t , t h e Mormon g r a n a r y most l i k e l y e v o lv e d from t h e smoke house o f E a s t e r n America (S p e n c e r, 1937, 1 6 2 ) . D uring t h e warmer months th e g r a n a r y was f r e q u e n t l y u s e d a s s l e e p i n g q u a r t e r s f o r t h e o l d e r b o y s , and a p p a r e n t l y t h e r e were numerous c a s e s where g r a n a r i e s s e r v e d a s te m p o ra ry l i v i n g q u a r t e r s f o r a whole f a m ily w h ile i n th e p r o c e s s o f b u i l d i n g a h o u s e . 5 I n c o n t r a s t t o t h e f l i m s y a p p e a ra n c e o f t h e hay b a r n , t h e g r a n a r y was u s u a l l y a v e ry s o l i d s t r u c t u r e b u i l t o f a d o b e, s t o n e , o r heavy 2" by 6" p l a n k , b u t r a r e l y of lo g ( F i g . 1 0 6 ).
