Show 514 sodann mancherlei Wurzeln und Beeren, die ihnen zur Nahrung dienen. Sie ziehen viele starke, schöne Pferde, sind wohlgekleidet und vortreffliche Biberjäger. Bogen und Pfeile arbeiten sie sehr gut. Ihre Sprache ist schwer zu erlernen, man spricht die Worte leise und undeutlich aus, dabei giebt es darin viele schnalzende Töne, und man stösst mit der Zungenspitze an, auch giebt es viele dumpfe Kehllaute. 13. Allein - Jicha (_ch guttur.). *) Der ausdauernden Geduld des Herrn ICipp, der dieser Sprache vollkommen mächtig war, verdanke ' dieses weitläuftige Wortverzeichniss, welches ich mit Hülfe mehrer Mandans niederschrieb. Bei e. n Versuche einer Grammatik wurde ich, wie schon gesagt, durch Krankheit unterbrochen. Herr Gall» ^ rechnet die Mandans zu den Münitarris (1. c. pag. 125.); allein er hatte gar keine Wortverzeichnis ^ ¦von ihrer Sprache, und konnte deshalb auch kein richtiges Urtheil fällen. Die Unterschriften zu ^ von ihm erwähnten Vertrage, hatte man aus Mangel eines Mandan-Dolmetschers in die Monitarri-'-P ehe übersetzt (Gallatin 1. c. pag. 379 und 125.), welches man deutlich aus den Wörtern Matsa (Ma und Lahpeetzee (LachpUzi, Jlär) ersehen kann, da dieses sämmtlich Mönitarri-Worte sind. Ich durch die obigen Sprachproben der Maudan« mancherlei der früheren von diesem Volke a"8geTei Unrichtigkeiten zu widerlegen. |
