Die Sonnenblumen (Mapä), ein grosser Helianthus, der dem in unseren Gärten cultivirten ganz ähnlich zu seyn scheint. Man pflanzt sie reihenweise zwischen den Mays. Es giebt zwei bis drei Varietäten, mit rotheu, schwarzen und eine andere mit kleineren Samen. Aus den Körnern bäckt man wohlschmeckende Kuchen. DerTabackCManuaschä oder Manasche), welchen die Mandans, Mönnitarris und Arikkaras culüviren, wird dort hoch, und man lässt diese Pflanze ohne alle Sorgfalt aus dem Samen aufwachsen. Sie wird nicht verpflanzt. Man schneidet die Stengel ab, wenn sie reif sind, trocknet sie, und pulverisirt oder schneidet die Blätter mit den kleinen Zweigen in kleine Stücke. Geruch und Geschmack sind unangenehm für den Europäer, und mehr Chamillen- als Tabackartig. Häufig wird dieser Taback nicht mehr cultivirt, da er durch den ihnen angenehmeren Taback der Weissen verdrängt worden ist; doch erhält man immer die Art. Nur bei feierlichen Gelegenheiten z. B.
