Show 66 1831 wiirden die Pickets aufgerichtet. Herr Mitch ill ubernahm nun die Direction dieses neuen Fortes, welches er in einem gewissen Grade vollendete, und Fort-Clarke nannte. Im Juli wurde Kipp mit 45 Mann an den Maria-River ge-sendet, und erbaute dort das Fort, dessen Ruinen weiter oben erwahnt worden sind. Er blieb daselbst bis zum Friihjahre 1832, und wurde alsdann von Herrn Mitchill abgelosst, der nun das jetzige Fort-Piekann oder Mckenzie erbaule. Kipp versieht seitdem die Direction von Fort-Clarke, wenn man den Winter 1832 und 1833 ausnimmt, wo Herr Lamont dieselbe fiihrte, und wo Kipp als Clerk subordinirt war. Kleine Gefechte mit den Dacotas oder Sioux fielen in der Nach-barschaft vor, und als einst die Herren Lamont und Kipp sich am Kaminfeuer unterhielten, fiel ein Schuss durch das Fenster und die Kugel fuhr zwischen bei-den in die Wand. Die Mandan-Indianer befinden sich nun seit den 11 Jahren, welche Herr Kipp hier zubrachte, immer noch in derselben Lage und haben an Zahl weder ab noch zugenommen. Der Handel mit den Tndianern war meist immer derselbe und die Waaren standen auch etwa in deuselben Preisen, bis ihr Werth zuweilen durch fremde Kaufleute gesteigert wurde. Jetzt im Jahre 1833, da man die Rivalitat der Herren Soublette und Campbell zu bekampfen hatte, bezahlte man einen starken Biber mit 12 Dollars (30 fr.), da er doch in den Vereinten Staaten nicht mehr als 4 Dollars gait; es ist aber der Compagnie sehr wichtig, keine andere Gesellschaft aufkommen zu lassen. Die Indianer verlangen jetzt meist Pferde fur ihre Biber, und da sich zu Fort-Clarke zu wenige derselben befinden, so sandte man nach Fort-Pierre, urn von dort noch einige kommen zu lassen. Die Herren Soublette und Campbell unterhielten gegenwartig in einem jeden der benachbarten indianischen Dorfer einen ihrer Leute, und von ihrem bei den Monnitarris wohnhaften Clerk, Herrn Dougherty, ist weiter oben schon geredet worden, so wie sie auch denaltenDolmetscher Charbonneau in ihren Sold genom-men hatten*). Kipp hatte ebenfalls einen Trader bei den Monnitarris stationirt *) Die Herren Soublette und Campbell hatten im Spatjahre 1833 einen bedeutenden Schaden erlitten. |
