Durch diese Geschenke von oft hohem Werthe machen sie sich einen Namen und bringen sich in Ansehen bei ihren Landsleuten. Auf solchen Roben bemerkt man lange, rothe Figuren mit einem schwarzen Cirkel am Ende, gerade in Querreihen neben einander gestellt; diese bedeuten Peitschen, oder verschenkte Pferde, weil mau mit dem Pferde auch immer die dazu gehörige Peitsche verschenkt Rothe oder blauschwarze Querfiguren bedeuten verschenktes Tuch oder wollene Decken; parallele Querstreifen stellen Gewehre fErühpa) vor, und sind oft in ziemlich richtigen Umrissen gezeichnet. Oft ist die Robe unten am Ende in mehre herabhängende Streifen zerschnitten, und an den Seiten mit Zöpfen von Menschenhaar und buntgefärbtem, besonders gelbem und grünem Pferdshaare und Glasperlen verziert. Ehemals malten die Indianer solche Roben mit mehr Sorgfalt als jetzt, und man erhielt eine derselben für 5 Gewehrkugeln und die nöthige Pulverladung dazu; jetzt hingegen sind sie schlechter und werden oft mit 8 bis 10 Dollars C^O bis 25 fl.) bezahlt. Eine schön bemalte Robe gilt so viel, als zwei unbemalte. Ihre Leggings oder Beinkleider (Wapänpi-Hünschi, an und n franz.) sind mit Riemen an den ledernen Gürtel oder Ichparakähn (cA in der Kehle) befestigt und bestehen, wie bei allen Nord-Americanern für beide Beine aus zwei getrennten Theilen, die an ihrer äussereii Kante oder Nath mit einem 1 bis 2 Zoll breiten Längsstreifen von Porcupine in schönen, bunten Farben, jetzt auch häufig mit blauen und weisseu Glasperlen gestickt werden, und häufig auch mit langen ledernen Fransen besetzt sind, welche unten am Knöchel einen dichten auf dem Boden etwas nachschleifenden Bündel bilden. Das Leder der Beinkleider selbst ist meist rothbraun oder fahl röthlich angestrichen, gewöhnlich mit Thon, auch öfters auf diese Art weiss, oft unterhalb des Kniees mit schwarzen Querstreifen bezeichnet. von den Engländern so genannte Breechcloth (Nökkä) kommt bei ihnen vor, Figuren stellen einige seiner Hauptheldentlmten vor, wo er fünf Chefs verschiedener Nationen mit eigener Hand erlegte. |
