Show 2*3*' S^t#5« 48 lebenden Fuchs, denen sie eine angenehme Abwechselung in der Kost gaben; aber nicht so ergieng es uns selbst, wir batten bis jetzt, wo es nur irgend moglich war, wlewohl vergeblich, ein Wild zu eriegen gesucht. TJeberall fand man Spuren der Biber, abgenagte Starnme, Verhaue und glatt geschliffene Pfade; die Weiden-dickungen waren stets von der kleiuen Meise (Parus atricapillus) bewohnt, so wie von Elstern (Pica hudsonica). Da uns der Schuss nach einem Trupp von acht prachtigen weissen Schwanen und nach wilden Gansen nicht gelingen wollte, so legten wir in der Nahe der Riviere-bourbeuse (White-Earth-River von Lewis und Clarke) an, und mehre Jager durchstreiften das Land, wahrend das Boot unter dem steilen Ufer befestigt blieb. Eisschollen trieben schon den Missouri herab, und zersplitterten mit grossem Gerausche an den im Wasser liegenden Treib-holzstammen. Dieses Eis treibt aus den Nebenfliissen, wie hier aus der Riviere-bourbeuse hervor, und der von demselben verursachte Larm wurde durch das dumpfe Getose der einstiirzenden Ufer und des Wellenschlages bei dem starken Winde vermehrt. Meine lebenden Thiere, welche kein Schweinfleisch fressen wollten, hungerten sehr, und besonders machten die Baren ein unaufhorliches Getose, welches in jeder Hinsicht sehr lastig war. Unsere Hoffnungen giengen nicht hi Erfullung, die Jager hatten zwei Stuck Wild gefehlt und urn 4 Uhr am Nach-mittage setzte ich die Reise, jedoch nur langsam fort, da meine Leute liber Mattig-keit klagten. Haben die Cauadier nicht immer angefullte Magen, so ist nicht auf ihre Ausdauer zu bauen. Da wir fur den Abend fruh anlegten, so zerstreute man sich zum Jagen in den Wald. Die Stelle, wo wir uns befanden, zeigte unmittelbar bei dem Lagerplatze eine Menge von Spuren aller Arten von Wild. Jenseit einer jungen geschlossenen, gleichartig aufgeschossenen Dickung von Pappeln (Cotton-Wood), zeigten sich Sandhiigel mit gelbem Grase bewachsen, und hinter diesen lioher Pappelwald, dessen Boden mit einera dunkelrothen Unterholze von Cornus-Rosa- und Buffaloe-Berry-Gebtischen bedeckt war, durchrankt von Clematis und Vitis. Die Beeren der Weinstocke hiengen hier zum Theil noch an den Zweigen, |
