Show I 90 Individuum bemerkt habe. Ein harter Vogel ist der Uhu {Strix virginiand), der den ganzen strengen Winter hier aushält, so wie noch eine andere Eulenart; ich vermuthe Strix asio. Die Schneeeule [Strix nyctea) ist hier schon zu verschiedenen Zeiten geschossen worden. In den Höhlen der Prairie-Dogs soll man während des Sommers öfters die Erdeule {Strix cunicularia?) antreffen; überhaupt halten sich während des Sommers mehre interessante Vogelarten hier auf. Der Pa-pagey {Psittacus carolitiensis) soll den Punca-Creek nicht bedeutend überschreiten, doch hat mau ihn am L'eau qui court gesehen, und er mag auch zuweilen noch weiter westwärts streifen. Der Fliegenvogel {Trochüus Colubris) kommt alljährlich bis zu den Maudan-Dörfern hinauf, jedoch weder regelmässig noch zahlreich; die Mandans nennen ihn Manasch-Chöhp Kochächka {ch in der Kehle, die drei ersten Sylben zusammen gesprochen), weil er vorzüglich an den Blumen der von ihnen cultivirten Tabackspflanze {Nicotiana quadrivalvis) umher schwirrt, welche diese Indianer Manaschä nennen. Für das, was ich früher über den Zungenbau und die Nahrung der Fliegenvögel gesagt habe, giebt Audubon in dem 5. Bande seiner Oruithological Biography (pag. 546) eine Bestätigung. Wilde Tauben leben während des Sommers häufig in den Wäldern. Die Dove (La tourte, Columba caro-linensis) bewohnt alle kleinen Gebüsche in der Prairie, so wie alle Schluchten der Höhlen und ist überall zahlreich verbreitet. Im Winter ziehen diese Vögel, so wie beinahe alle Spechte {Picus~) von hier fort; nur Picus pubescens hält aus. Ausser den Blackbirds, deren man hier vier Arten kennt, Quiscalus versicolor Bouap., Icterusphoeniceus, xanthocephalus und eine feuerfarbig und schwarze der Baltimore ähnliche, schon früher erwähnte Species (auricollis), welche ebenfalls ein hängendes Nest baut, sind die Raben und Elstern (Picd) zahlreich. Der Kukuk (Coccyzus americanus) soll sich hier nicht sehen lassen. Die Raben und Elstern sind Standvögel, die übrigen ziehen im Herbste fort. Richard so n redet (s. sixth report pag. 176) über die Identität der schwarzen Krähe, die man für corone hielt und der Elster mit den verwandten europäischen Vögeln; allein ich |
