Show 280 der Sturm vielen Schnee gebracht, welcher aber nachliess, als der Wind nach Norden herum gieng. Um 8 Uhr zeigte der Thermometer 14° Fahr. - 8° Reaum.J. Der Anblick der Prairie war jetzt merkwürdig, man glaubte Meer bei furchtbarem Sturme zu sehen! Die weite Schneefläche war durch Wind in eine Wolke aufgetrieben, man konnte gegen den kalten Sturm kein öffnen, und befand sich in einer dicken Wolke von scharf gepeitschtem Sehne ¦ Oberhalb dieser trüben Schnee wölke sah man den Himmel hell, und die Kuppe der Prairie-Hügel blickten hervor. Um so häuslicher und erfreulicher war es a dem prasselnden Kaminfeuer, wo mancherlei Arbeiten uns eine angenehme Bescb»~ tigung gewährten. In diesen Tagen hatten die Feinde den Mönnitarris sechs Pfer(J gestohlen. Am 16. zeigte der Thermometer 2° unter 0 (- 15° Reaum.)* ^ Wasser war schon seit einiger Zeit täglich bei dem starken Kaminfeuer in unsere Zimmer gefroren, besonders kalt war es daselbst bei den heftigen kalten Stürze11' Gegen den 19. December wurde das Wetter wieder schön, nach einigen T^e gab es Schnee und der Missouri war so stark gewachsen, dass er seine EisdeC <jt« zum Theil überströmte. Es trafen einige Leute des Herrn Soublette aus Louis bei uns ein, welches sie am 14, October verlassen hatten. Sie bestätig die Nachricht von dem Aufhören der Cholera daselbst. Am Conzas- River »a man schon im October 15 Zoll hoch Schnee gehabt. Sie erzählten ferner, da die Bedeckung der Caravane von Sta. Fe von den Indianern, wahrscheinlich d i Mngel an die Bedeckung der C Arikkaras, dergestalt eingeschlossen gewesen wäre, dass sie aus Mangel an bensmitteln 14 ihrer Pferde hätten schlachten müssen.
