Show 2U Die Mandans legen den drei Mönnitarri-Dörfern gänzlich abweichende Namen bei. Eläh-Sä heisst bei ihnen Mönnitarr-Öchtä; Awaüchai: Mihtichare (ch guttur.) und Awachähwi: Mächahä*). Einleuchtend ist es, dass durch die Benennungen? welche die Dörfer und Nationen bei den verschiedenen Völkern führen, in den Reisebeschreibungen häufig Irrthümer und Missverständnisse entstanden sind. Gegenwärtig sind die Mönnitarris beständig in ihren Dörfern anwesend und wandern nicht mehr umher wie ehemals, wo sie gleich den Pahnis u. a. Nationen? den Bisonheerden nachzogen, sobald ihre Felder bestellt waren, dann im Herbste zur Aerndte zurückkehrten, und nachher wieder in die Prairie hinaus zogen. Au* ihren Wanderungen bedienten sie sich der Lederzelte, die man neben ihren fest' stehenden Hütten zum Theil auch noch jetzt im Gebrauche findet. Der grosse von ihnen getrennt lebende Theil ihrer Nation, die Haiderohka, wie sie sie nennen? oder die Crows (Corbeaux) ist noch jetzt ausschliesslich ein Jägervolk geblieben? und baut keine Art nützlicher Gewächse. Selbst den Tabak pflanzt man wenig mehr, da man den der Kaufleute vorzieht; dennoch wird die Art dieser Pflanzt immer noch erhalten, wie dies schon früher erzählt wurde. In ihrer Bildung sind die Mönnitarris nicht bedeutend von den Mandans verschieden, doch fällt es dem Fremden auf, dass sie im Allgemeinen grösser sind« Die meisten von ihnen sind wohl gewachsen und stark, viele sehr gross, schulterig und muskulös, welches man von der Mehrzahl ihrer Männer sagen Ihre Nasen sind häufig sanft, hier und da stärker gekrümmt, oft auch gerade. habe auch einige vollkommene Botocuden-Physiognomien unter ihnen gesehen. Weiber gleichen ziemlich denen der Mandans, mehre sind gross und stark meisten klein, dick und corpulent; auch finden sich einige hübsche Gesichter ihnen, die mau nach indianischer Art schön nennen kann. Da sie schon lange n» den Mandans zusammen leben, so haben beide Völker einerlei Tracht angenommen? doch kann man wohl sagen, dass die Mönnitarris noch mehr auf netten und scno *c *) Bradbury ueunt dieses Dorf gar das der Nation der Ahwahbaways C)>ay. lot). |
