Show 54 Ich hatte leider zu bedauern, dass mein Gewehr mit Schrot geladen war; denn aus einem dichten Busche rannte ein Hirsch (C. virgmianus) bei mir vorbei, den ich sehr gut hatte sehiessen konnen. Man sah ein Rudel Elke und das kleine gestreifte Erdeichhorn, welches jedoch nicht bis zu den Mandan-Dorfern hinab verbreitet ist. Gegen 11 Uhr setzten wir die Beise fort, bei welcher wir durch das Ufer vor dem rauhen kalten Winde geschiitzt und von der Sonne wohl erwarmt waren. Eiu Rudel von Antilopen kreuzte fliichtig vor uns den Missouri und wir suchten vergebens ihnen vorzukommen, um sie abzuschueiden. Diese angenehineu Thiere verlassen jetzt meistens den Missouri und eilen bei herannahendem Winter den Gebirgen, den Black-Hills zu*). Eine Elster setzte sich auch hier wieder auf das Steuerruder und liess ihren Ruf ,,Twit! Twit!" horen, welcher ganzlich ver-schieden von dem der europaischen Elster ist. Euten und andere Wasservogel, die uns sonst so viel Unterhaltung gewahrt hatten, sahen wir nur weuige, ohne Zwei-fel, weil sie auf den iiberall uoch offenen Landseen mehr Nahrung fanden. Die rostkopfigen Tauchenten (Mergus) kamen uns nahe, am Ufer zeigten sich Wolfe. In dem Uferwalde bemerkte man abgenagte Stamine in der Nahe eiues Biberbaues; der weisskopfige Adler, der kleine Buntspecht (Picus pubescens) und die Prairie-Hen hielten sich hier auf. Um 5 l/2 Uhr legten wir fur die Nacht an dem siidli-chen Ufer an, wo der Wald durch die Biber ganzlich devastirt war. Sie hatten eine Menge von grossen Stammen gefallt, dereii Spane auf dem Boden umher lagen. Die meisten Baume wareu halb durchgeuagt, umgebrochen oder doch abgestorben und auf diese Weise war in dem Walde eine Blosse entstanden. Nahe dabei be-fand sich im Flusse ein Biberbau, oder wie die Americaner diese Wohnungen nen-nen, eine Beaver-Lodge, zu welchem ein sehr begangener und abgeschliffener Pfad fiihrte, den wir benutzten, um von uud zu unserem Boote zu gehen**). Die Natur *) Townsend erzahlt, dass er ein junges Tliier dieser Art gezahmt hatte, wovon mir bis jetzt nocli kein Beispiel vorgekommen war. **) King (I. c. V.
