Show 660 Bisonten und andern Annehmlichkeiten des Lebens finde. Gott (der grosse Geist) glauben sie, wohne iß der Hölle*), damit er denjenigen dort begegnen könne, welche ihn beleidigten, indem alsdann durch seine Gegenwart ihre Leiden erhöht und ihnen die gebührenden Strafen auferlegt würden. Den bösen Geist setzen sie in den Himmel, wo er stets die Guten versuche, deren Glückseligkeit durch ihren Widerstand gegen das Böse erhöht werde. Sie glauben, dass die zur Hölle gesendeten, dort nach Verhältniss ihrer Sünden leiden müssten, und dass sie nachher in das Land der Glücklichen versetzt würden, wo sie aber den Versuchungen des Teufels ausgesetzt, und für ihre neuen Uebertretungen verantwortlich blieben. Das hier erwähnte jährliche Fest betrachten sie als eine religiöse Zeremonie, wo sie durch selbst auferlegte grausame Martern den Allmächtigen zu besänftigen, Verzeihung ihrer Sünden durch das Versprechen künftigen glücklichen Erfolges ihrer Jagden und Kriegszüge zu erlangen hoffen. Das hier erwähnte Fest wird zum Theil auch zur Erinnerung an die Befreiung von der grossen Wasserfluth gefeiert, wovon sowohl ihre Traditionen als auch die Art wie sie dasselbe feiern, einen Beweis geben, und auf deren genaue Befolgung, sie als auf einen unerlässlichen Theil ihrer religiösen Gebräuche halten. Di« Annäherung der Bisonheerden, welche sie mit Ueberfluss versorgen, glauben sie von diesem Feste abhängig, und halten dasselbe deshalb für unerlässlich. In dem Mittelpuncte ihres Dorfes **) befindet sich ein runder freier Platz von 150 F. im Durchmesser, der für alle dergleichen Aufführungen und öffentliche Ceremonien frei gehalten wird. Eine der Hütten, welche an diesen stossen und die man Medecine-Hütte nennt, hat 75 Fuss im Durchmesser und wird ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------_____-r ?) Herr Catlin hat in Hinsicht des Wohnplatzes des Herrn des Lebens die Mandnns wohl missverstanden, oäer er ist unrichtig berichtet worden, wie mir dies auch Herr Kipp, welcher der Mandan-Sprache ganz mächtig war, bei Durchlesung der hier mitgetheilten Beschreibung bekräftigte. Den Sitz des Herrn des Lebens glauben sie in der Sonne, und nicht in der Hölle, weshalb sie auch besonders die Sonne verehren. Der Ausdruck Hölle sollte hier gar nicht gewählt werden, indem ;,das Land der Guten" und „das Land der Bösen" bessere Bezeichnungen für diese Begriffe zu seyn scheinen. •*) Der Erzähler redet immer nur von einem Mandan-Dorfe, da es deren doch zwei giebt, in welchen beiden die Darstellung der Arche angebracht ist, auch scheint derselbe den Namen des von ihm erwähnten Dorfes nicht gekannt zu haben. 3_s |
