Diese Insel soll 13 Meilen lang und " bis 7 Meilen breit seyn. Sie befindet sich in der Nähe des Erie-Sees, und von ler an ist der Fluss ziemlich frei von Inseln, bis man sich den Fällen nähert, wo ereo viele kleine auftreten. Das Wasser des Niagara hat überall die prächtig grüne Farbe der Schweizer-Seen, er ist beinahe doppelt so breit als der Rhein Ua(* an seinem jenseitigen Ufer bemerkt man das Dorf Chipewa, wo am 5. Juli ejn Gefecht zum Nachtheile der Engländer vorfiel. Der Weg von Tonawanta nach den grosseu Wasserfällen von Niagara, wohin voq ßuffaloe 22 Meilen rechnet, ist ziemlich bewohnt. Man hielt öfters an ttn<l wechselte Pferde. Gegen Mittag näherte man sich dem Dorfe Niagara, in Elches man von der dem Flusse abgewendeten Seite eintritt, und in einem sehr Dsehulichen, guten Gasthofe absteigt, deren sich hier mehre befinden. Niagara ist ein kleiues, unmittelbar bei den Fällen erbautes Dorf mit ansehn-lchen Häusern, welches ein Paar ziemlich irreguläre, ungepflasterte Strassen bildet. e Ufer des Flusses sind hier malerisch mit Nadelholz, Laubholz und Felsen geziert, O(*urch sie im Allgemeinen den Character uuserer europäischen Schweiz erhalten. nserm Gasthofe gegenüber befand sich die Wohnung eines gewissen Hooker, wel-er den Reisenden bei Besichtigung der Fälle als Führer dient, und auch eine lne Ausstellung von Naturalien und indianischen Kunstarbeiten, so wie ein Bil-besitzt.
