Juni war unsere Fahrt höchst angenehm, da sie uns die Wälder jetzt im schönsten Grün zeigte, wo Schlinggewächse sie verwirrten der Papaw-Baum von allen von mir geseheneu Gegenden am üppigsten belaub schien. Raupen hatten auch hier die Gebüsche zum Theil entblättert, GegeI Uhr Morgens, nachdem der Morgenduft sich verloren, erreichten wir schon Mündung des Ohio, wo sich das jetzt klare grüne Wasser des letzteren streng dem grauen und trüben des Missisippi abschnitt. Bei den auf der Landspitze «¦¦ sehen beiden Flüssen erbauten Wohnungen hielt man an, um die von New-Ore' kommenden Dampfschiffe abzuwarten, und einen Theil ihrer Passagiere aufzuneb Der Ohio war je'tzt zu seicht, um aufwärts von den grossen Missisippi-Dampfscl11 befahren zu werden, daher geben diese ihre Passagiere an die kleineren v°° Louis, Cincinnati, Louisville und Pittsburg *ab, welches uns jetzt einen unange£ men Aufenthalt verursachte. Der Boonslick, ein grosses New-Orleans-Boot? jetzt gestrandet im Missisippi und hoffte auf Erlösung; deshalb schifften wir a°r und führten ihm ein Flatboat mit Holz zu, durch dessen Hülfe er sich erleid konnte, da er besonders Blei geladen hatte. Dieses Geschäft hielt unsere Met»m lange auf, und wir kehrten dann wieder an unsere Landspitze zurück. ®xe des Stillstandes benutzten wir zu einer Excursion in den unmittelbar bei den nungen beginnenden hohen Wald. Papilio Aiax und Turnus waren hier sehr ü» wir fiengen besonders die ersteren in grosser Anzahl. In dem Schatten des des fanden wir die rothe Missisippi-Tangara [Tanagra missisippensis Gmßi mir auf dieser Reise noch nicht vorgekommen war, und beobachteten auch ibf bei welchem die Vögel durchaus nicht schüchtern waren (1). Der schöne more war hier ebenfalls häufig, so wie mehre interessante Vögel. Gegen 3 Uhr rief die Schiffsglocke die zerstreuten Jäger zurück.
