Show Tg M Hl 408 wunderung der grossen Wasserfälle, beinahe unausgesetzt an ihreu Ufern zubrachten, nahmen wir Abschied von dieser interessanten Gegend, und ich wählte den Postwagen nach Tonawanta, um auf dem Erie-Canale und dem schönen Hudson nach New-York zurück zu kehren. i) Dieses schwarze Eichhorn ist ohne Zweifel Sciurus niger der Zoologen, doch nn ich in keiner der von diesem Thiere gegebenen Beschreibungen angemerkt, dass der Scrrw nur schwarz braun, und der Körper schwarz gefärbt sey, welches ich an dem am JNiil£ häufig vorkommenden schwarzen Eichhorn durchgängig beobachtete. Ich will dieses L"1 nachfolgend in der Kürze beschreiben: Männliches Thier: Ohren ziemlich schmal-elliptisch und oben massig abgerun wenig behaart, glattrandig, d. h. oben ohne tibertretende Haare; an der Sohle der Vor« hand befinden sich fünf Ballen, an der Hintersohle vier, ein fünfter kleinerer steht t* zurück, hinter diesem ein Busch bräunlich-gelber Haare; der Schwanz ist nicht xVl'el7'e lig, wie an 8c. ci?iereus, sondern rundum behaart, länger als der Rumpf, dabei schm» als an cinereus. Färbung: Das ganze Thier kohlschwarz oder dunkel bräunlich-schwarz, die F«s sohlen dunkel fleischbraun; Lippenrand ein wenig weisslich, jedoch kaum bemerk»8 Schwanz gewöhnlich bräunlich - schwarz, mehr bräunlich als der Körper; Nagezähne <>ra gengelb. Ausmessung: Länge 18" 11'", L. d. Schwanzes ohne die Haarspitzen 8"; L. < mit den Haarspitzen 10" 2 >/a'"; L. d- Kopfs 2" 6'"; Breite des Kopfs zwischen den gen 13'"; Höhe des Ohrs an der Scheitelseite gemessen 10'"; L. d- Vordersohle 1"^" L. d. Hintersohle bis zur Ferse 2" 4'"; Breite des Ohrs an der breitesten Stelle 5 y* ' ^ Dieses Eichhorn soll in allen jenen nördlichen* Gegenden vorkommen; am Niagar ,{ den grossen canadischen Seen ist es sehr zahlreich. Es darf nicht mit dem früher vo erwähnten schwarzen Eichhorn der Alleghanys verwechselt werden, welches wahrSc lieh nur Varietät des grauen Qcinereus') ist. |
