Show asesgwmt^emm 381 >ö des einige Meilen von hier wohnenden bekannten Engländers Bullock be-und welches ich daher nicht zu sehen bekam. i einer Untersuchung der Buchläden fand ich nur elegant gebundene belle-r*stische Werke, so wie statistische über verschiedene Länder, aber weder natur-storische, noch Abbildungen und Beschreibungen der zu sehr vernachlässigten indischen Bevölkerung des Landes. Ich machte mehre interessante Bekanntschaften a- die des als Schriftsteller rühmlichst bekannten Arztes Dr. Daniel Drake ssen Werk, Picture of Cincinnati und andere Abhandlungen zeigen, dass er auch ^ Studium der Natur nicht vernachlässigte*). Ich fand mehre Bekannte, u. a. errQ Richard Owen aus New-Harmony, und überzeugte mich bei allen meinen Xcursionen von der grossen Menge hier anwesender Deutschen, deren Zahl man *0,000 anschlägt**). Ueberall hörte man deutsch reden, deutsche Bauern ka-n stündlich an und durchzogen die Strassen; allein die meisten dieser Leute ge-"en der rohen ungebildeten Classe an, und sind nicht geeignet, den Americanern ! günstige Idee von unserer Nation zu geben. Anstatt sogleich auf das Land gehen und sich dort zu verdingen, um die Art des hiesigen Ackerbaues kennen fernen, schlendern sie in der Stadt umher, wo sie liederlichen Landsleuten in Hände fallen, geben das wenige mitgebrachte Vermögen aus, und sind dann 0 den Bewohnern verachtet. Man findet aber gegenwärtig auch schon viele ge-e*e und achtbare Deutsche hier, und diese haben schon viel dazu beigetragen, ¦:- Aöiericanern. eine bessere Idee unseres Volkes beizubringen. Sehr lobenswerth Plan achtbarer Männer, einen Verein zur Aufrechthaltung und Ansiedelung ist f deutschen Landsleute zu bilden, der gewiss von dem grössten Nutzen seyn d *) Ü • a- das 8.
