Ihre Physiognomie ist nicht bedeutend von der der benachbarten Völker, besonders der Mandaus und Mönnitarris verschieden, ^ ihre Weiber sollen die schönsten am ganzen Missouri, aber auch zugleich die ausschweifendsten gewesen seyn. Ihre Tracht ist ebenfalls in keinem Hauptpuncte vo» der der Mandaus verschieden, und ihre Roben sind meist rothbraun angestrichen« Den Anzug, so wie die meisten Gebräuche der Pähnis haben sie verlassen #*). ~~" Sie bewohnten am Missouri zwei durch einen kleinen Bach getrennte Dörfer* von welchen das obere das Nord-Dorf, Nahokähta, das untere das Süd-Dorf? Höhka-Wirätt, auch wie der alte Garreau behauptete, Achtarahä hiess. Ehemals »soll auch ein Theil der Arikkaras am nördlichen Ufer des Missouri gewohnt haben? welchen sie Swaruchti (lieh guttur.) nennen, d. h. Medecine-Wasser, oder »uC" Hokahah-Ninn. Sie zählten zusammen etwa 500 Krieger und 3,600 bis 4,000 Seelen, als sie den Missouri verliessen, und besassen viele Pferde und Hunde5 jetzt sollen sie 600 streitbare Männer stellen können, und noch immer ein kriege' irisches, den Weissen sehr gefährliches Volk seyn. Boss Cox in seiner ßeise nach dem Columbia ***) nennt sie, „a powerful tribe," welches wohl zu viel ges»gt ist. Sayf) erzählt, es habe zwei Meilen vom Beaver-Creek ein Arikkara-0°r gestanden, und nicht weit davon am Shell-Creek habe sich eine künstliche Höh*e befunden, die man Pawni-Medecine nannte. Die weitläuftigsten Nachrichten, welc»e mir über dieses Volk bekannt geworden sind, befinden sich in Brackenridge "P' und Bradbury-J"j~i\) Travels, welche aber, obschon der erstere Gelegenheit hatte? *) Lewis und Clarke CVöl. I. pag. 188J geben an, die Mandana nennten dieses Volk Pähnis, den ^alD Arikkara hätten sie sich selbst gegeben, welches gänzlich unrichtig ist. •*) Warden giebt eine kurze, aber ziemlich richtige Notiz von den Ricaras CVal. 111. pag.
