Say beschreibt auch schon den Corn-Dance, oder richtiger gesagt das Com-Fest, oder das Einweihungsfest der Saaten*). Sie haben dasselbe erst von den Maudans angenommen und kannten es vorher nicht; es wird jetzt übrigens ant dieselbe Art gefeiert als bei jenen. Das grosse Medeciue-Fest zur Herbeiziehung der Bisonheerden wird in einem der nachfolgenden Capitel beschrieben werden, so wie einige andere Zauberkünste der Weiber. Auch das Okippe kommt bei ihnen vor, allein mit mehren Abweichungen, und es wird hier Akupehri (ku ganz kurz? ri Zungensp. und kurz) genannt. Die sogenannte Arche fehlt in ihren Dörfern? dagegen bemerkt man in der Mitte des Platzes einen eingepflanzten Pfahl oben rn& einer Gabel. Wenn im Mai oder Juni die Partisane der Kriegspartheien, Akurihdi (r Zungensp., di kurz), einen Coup unternehmen wollen, so wird die Vorübung dazu mit dem Pönitenzfeste (Akupehri) vieler jungen Leute vereinigt, welche sieb deu Rang der Tapfern oder Mäuner verschaffen wollen. Man erbaut vor dem Orte eine grosse, oben offene Medecine-Hütte, welche in der Mitte eine Abtheilung hat> in welcher die Pönitenz-Candidaten ihren Platz nehmen. In der Mitte macht m^n für die Partisane gewöhnlich zwei länglich-viereckige Gruben, in welchen dieselbe0 4 Tage und 4 Nächte lang nackt ausgestreckt liegen, nur ein Stück Leder ^ die Hüften tragend. Der erste Partisan wählt sich gewöhnlich den zweiten oder seinen Gehülfen, der dann die Medecine mit durchmacht. Es finden sich immer junge Leute genug ein, die an ihrem Körper Martern ausstehen wollen, um Mut*1 und Entschlossenheit zu zeigen. Sie hungern 4 Tage und 4 Nächte, werden dabei schwach und matt. Manche von ihnen fangen schon am dritten Tage mit den Mar~ tern an, der vierte Tag ist aber eigentlich für dieselben bestimmt.
