Show 258 mid man ist anfanglich iiberrascht und erstaunt sie zu horen, man glaubt nicht, sie von einein so kleinen Thiere kommen konne. Er lasst sie besonders im Fnih- jahre horen, wo er auch sehr unruhig war und immer die Freiheit suchte. Mehre Wolfe, die mir die Indianer gebracht hatten, wurden, nachdem man ifc-nen das Fell abgezogen, neben dem Forte niedergelegt, es wollte uns aber nich* gelingen, ein solches Thier bei diesem Koder zu erlegen; dagegen hatte Dreidop-pel auf seinen Excursionen ein Paar Wolfe erlegt, die er u. a. durch Nachahmung €er Hasenstimme herbei lockte (reitzte), und dann mit der Biichse schoss. ^ie Hasen, welche anfanglich noch eine etwas grau geinisehte Farbe gezeigt hatten > trugen jetzt ihr vollkommen schneeweisses Winterkleid, und waren bei Schn©e nicht wohl von der Umgebung zu unterscheiden. Man fand sie einzeln an den Bo* geln sitzend, und hielt sie fur Bisonschadel, wenn die Prairie von Schnee-en** Jflosst war. Am Abend des 25. Novembers wurden wir durch die Nachricht allarmirt, da^S feindliche Indianer vor dem Forte waren. Die bei uns befindlichen sogenann* ten Soldats des Fortes, Dip auch undBerock-Ita'inii griffen sogleich zu ihren Wa*" fen, man offnete vorsichtig das Thor, und entdeckte einen Monniiarri, der sich jn der Dunkelheit an dem einen der Blockhauser verborgen hielt, von wo er etwaS unsanft fortgetrieben wurde. Charbonneau traf zu dieser Zeit bei uns ein, um uns zu einein grossen Medeciue-Feste bei den Monnitarris einzuladen, in welche Absicht er weit hergekoimnen war. Ich nahni diese Einladung an. Am 26. November friih hatten wir schones Wetter und hellen Himmel, seb giinstig fiir unsere Unternehraung. Um 9 Uhr verliessen wir, Bodmer, CharboD" neau und ich das Fort zu Fusse, mil unseren Doppelgewehren und dem nothige Schiessbedarfe ausgeriistet; ein junger Monnitarri-Krieger begleitete uns. Wir n»B' men die Richtung parallel mit dem Missouri aufwarts, indem uns Mih-Tutta-Bang' kusch zur Rechten blieb und folgten dem Wege nach Ruhptare, der aus v'ie*el neben einander in der Prairie ausgetretenen Pfaden besteht, und an dem fraP ill |
