Show V?*l «K^ \4 f>___^. - ; - I 663 3 ersten Tage findet eine grosse Verschiedenheit der Tänze, sonderbarer Gesänge und Ceremonien statt, welche von fantastisch gekleideten und bemalten Personen vor der Medecine-Hütte aufgeführt werden. Diese Tänze und Darstellungen werden um einen hölzernen Cylinder von 6 Fuss Weite und 10 F. Höhe aufgeführt, welcher vor der Medecine-Hütte steht, und einige ihrer heiligsten, mit grösster Sorge aufbewahrten Medecioes enthält, und der das Symbol der Arche oder des grossen Canots*} ist. Am ersten Tage tanzt man 4mal, am zweiten Tage 8mal, am dritten 1 Sinai und endlich 16mal am vierten oder letzten Tage. Die Hauptpersonen bei diesen Scenen sind 8 nackte Männer mit schwarz angestrichenem Körper, welche Bisonroben mit Hörnern über sich gelegt tragen. Sie neigen den Körper in horizontaler Stellung vorwärts und führen den Büffeltanz **) auf, indem sie gewundene Fächer von Weidenzweigen in den Händen tragen. Zwei nackte, schwarz angestrichene und in Bärenfelle gehüllte Männer, stellen Bären vor; zwei andere ebenfalls nackte schwarz angestrichene, weiss gefleckte Knaben machten die weissköpfi-gen Adler; eine Menge von jungen Leuten, deren Körper gelb, Kopf und Füsse weiss angestrichen waren, bildeten die Cabri's oder Antilopen; 4 sehr alte Männer schlugen im Tacte zu der übrigen Musik mit Stöcken auf mit Wasser angefüllte Säcke. Diese Gefässe sind aus dem Halsfelle des Bisonstiers sehr treu in die Gestalt einer Schildkröte geformt, und enthalten mehre Gallons Wasser, welches seit undenklichen Zeiten in denselben eingeschlossen gewesen ist, und von ihnen dergestalt in Ehren gehalten wird, dass sie es nicht zu wechseln wagen. Zwei andere Männer tragen eine Rassel (in Gestalt einer Kürbisschale) in der Hand, welche sie zur Begleitung der Stimme heftig rütteln, und deren Geräusch mit deu eben erwähnten Instrumenten die Musik zu allen diesen verschiedenen sonderbaren Tänzen und Darstellungen bildet, deren Erwähnung zu weit führen würde. Der eigentliche Bisontanz ist dies nicht, der bei anderen Gelegenheiten von einer besonderen Bande aufgeführt wird; sondern es ist dies ein nur bei dieser Gelegenheit gebräuchlicher Tanz mit ganz besonderer Tracht, Bemalung und Figuren. .--¦:. |
