Die Löffel, Mansa (an franz.) sind meist gross, gelblich und bau- S aus den Hörnern des Bighorn (siehe den Holzschnitt B. I. pag. 568.) oder arz und ohne Bauch, aus Bisonhörnern gemacht. Die Nahrungsmittel sind man-lllchfaltig. le Indianer der feststehenden Dörfer haben vor den bloss umherziehenden Jä-* volkern den Vorzug, dass sie nicht nur jagen, sondern auch ihren Hauptunter-aus inren Pflanzungen nehmen, welches ihnen immer einen gewissen Rückhalt r Noth sichert. Zwar hungern auch diese Indianer zuweilen, wenn die Bison-en sich entfernt halten und ihre Feldfrüchte missrathen; allein der Mangel kann n Missouri-Indianern doch nie so drückend werden, als bei den mehr nörd-onnenden Nationen. Die Gewächse, welche sie bauen, sind Mays, Bohnen r\T oluO> Kürbisse, Sonnenblumen (Helianthus annuus) und die Tabackspflanze ¦otiarta f/uadrivalvis). 011 dem Mays*) giebt es viele Farben-Varietäten, und mehre Abarten, wel-Inneu verschiedene Benennungen tragen. Die allgemeine Benennung für die-in der Mandan-Sprache ist Köhchantä (ch guttural, an franz.). Die ^deiien Abänderungen sind etwa die nachfolgenden: 1) WeisserMays, Schötka; lber ^ays, Sihka; 3) Rother Mays, Sächkä; 4) Gefleckter Mays, Puskä; s;ie.habe di© verschiedenen Maysarten der Mandans mit nach Europa gebracht, und sie sind ausge-Rhe-W°rden; jedoch nur die frühen Sorten wurden im September 183.-» reif. Die Kolben haben am j. ™e bei weitem nicht die Grosse erlangt, als in ihrem Vaterlande. Dort wird die Pflanze 4-5-6 ü°ch, und die Farben der Körner sind überaus abwechselnd, lebhaft und schön. Am Rheine er-^d«e Pflanze eine Höhe von*4 bis 4% Fuss.
