V°Q hier an abwärts zeigen sich an den Ufern abgerundete, mit Niederwald bedeckte Berge, welche den Rheinbergen an vielen Stellen gleichen. Der Fluss eilt öuu durch eine enge malerische Kehle, wo ihm die grün bewachsenen Berge nahe reten*), in dieser Gegend liegt Westpoint am westlichen Ufer, wo sich die Mili-tär-Akademie der Vereinten Staaten befindet. Die Gegend öffuet sich von hier an mehr und wird flacher, der Fluss ist überaus breit und stolz. Wir schifften Singsing v°rbei, am östlichen Ufer, wo sich das grosse Zuchthaus befindet, und erreichten noch vor Abend New-York. Ich fand zu meiner Freude diese Stadt in dem besten Gesundheits-Zustande alle unsere Freunde unverändert wieder. Am 8. Juli besuchte ich Philadelphia, w°hin mau jetzt von Amboy aus auf der neuen Eisenbahn gelangte. Zu Bordentown Nahm uns das Dampfschiff Philadelphia auf, und wir erreichten letztere Stadt gegen * Uhr nach Mittag. Mein zweitägiger Aufenthalt daselbst war zur Aufsuchung ei-Ulger Freunde bestimmt, und ich verdankte der Güte des Herrn Professors Harlan ^e belehrende Bekanntschaft des Herrn Duponceau, eines gelehrten Forschers in en indianischen Sprachen, so wie die Besichtigung mancher naturhistorischen Sammlungen der Stadt. Ich brachte einen Theil des Tages sehr angenehm im seiner liebenswürdigen Familie hin, auch Herr Isaac Lea, der kürzlich einer Heise nach Europa zurückgekehrt war, trug dazu bei, meine Zeit nütz-ic" und angenehm zu machen, indem er mir seine schöne Conchylien-Sammlung eigte, die besonders reich an Unio-Arten der americanischen Flüsse ist. Auch as Museum der Society of natural-seiences, welches Herr Professor Harlan mir Zu zeigen die Güte hatte, enthielt schon manche interessante Gegenstände, u. a. ) Ein Zweig der Blue- Mountains tritt Bei Westpoint unter dem Namen der Green-Mountains (a. War-de» 1. c. Vol. I. p. 84.) an den Hudson.
