Oefters werden von beiden Seiten einzelne Leute ge-tddtet und noch jetzt, drei Wochen vor meiner Ankunft zu Fort-Clarke waren drei Feinde dem Forte gegeniiber an das Ufer gekommen und hatten Zeichen gegeben, man moge sie iibersetzen. Ein Mann und zwei Weiber waren in einem Leder-boote hiniibergeschifFt, worauf die Fremden sogleich den ersteren erschossen. Fort-Clarke, wie dasselbe jetzt besteht, ist etwa z/4 Stunde unterhalb der Steile des alten Fortes von Lewis und Clarke, ohngefahr 300 Schritte unterhalb des Mandan-DorfesMih-Tutta-Hangkusch erbaut, und liegt einige 80 Schritte vom sudlichen Flussufer entfernt auf einer ebenen Prairie, liber dem ziemlich steilen Ufer des Missouri. Dieses Ufer ist unmittelbar unter jenem indianischen Dorfe weit hoher und vollkommen steil abgerissen. Etwa ein Paar hundert Schritte unterhalb des Fortes offnet sich ein kleiner Bach, von den Mandans Pach-Ohkirussa-Passaba (der Fluss in dem man die Schiisseln wascht, la riviere ou on lave les plats) genannt, welcher steile Thonufer hat, und sich in einer Entfenmng von 350 Schritten vom Missouri in zwei Arme theilt, von welehen der eine weiter siidlich, der andere aber auf 680 bis 700 Schritte hinter dem Forte herab kommt, nachdem er aus den Hiigeln in die ebene Prairie hervor getreten ist. Diese Hiigelkette bekranzt den Hintergrund der Prairie und schliesst auf dieser Seite die Aussicht aus dem Forte (siehe den kleinen Plan dieser Steile). Der Boden in dem Thale des Baches ist mit Gras bewachsen, und in den vielen Windungen desselben sieht man an den Ufern Gebiische und hohe Pflanzen, besonders aus der Syngenesie, als Solidago u. a., deren Samen im Winter Fringilla linaria und Emberiza nivalis auf-suchen. Im Friihjahre und Herbste findet man Enten auf diesem Bache, der von Flussschildkroten bewohnt wird; auch eine Unia kommt darin vor. Sobald er zu-friert, welches 1833 im November geschah, ziehen die Euten fort, die sich als-dann noch eine Zeit lang auf den einige Meilen von hier entfernten Teichen und Seen*) aufhalten, mit Pelikanen, Schwanen, wilden Gansen, Tauchenten *) Es glebt sehr viele Seen in dieser Gegend, besonders auf dem nordlichen Ufer des Missouri, im Umkreise von 2 Tagereisen oder etwas melir, wonl J85. Ein Salzsee ist etwas iiber % Tagereisen entfernt. Er |
