Um Mittag erreichten wir Nadaway- River und erfreuten uns des An-°kes der erhabenen Waldscenen der Ufer und der malerischen Inseln. Hier zeig-ea sich üppige Waldungen mit jungem Grün, bis zu den höchsten Astspitzen um-nkte Stämme, welche in Menge wie die schönsten hell grünen Säulen dastanden, r I^aub war glänzend und saftstrotzend, wie die ganze umgebende üppige Vege-*on. Selbst vom Schiffe sahen wir in diesem dunklen Walde das hochrothe Ge-aer der schönen rothen Tangara strahlen, welche die Franzosen am Missisippi Pape nennen, so wie des Cardinais, und die Feuerfarbe des Baltimore. Ein ßanzeuder Sonnenschein erleuchtete prachtvoll die beschriebenen Waldscenen $ wo r Red-Bud (Cercis canadensis) und die übrigen früh blühenden Bäume ihren cömuck schon verloren hatten. Die meisten Waldbäume dieser Walder des unte-n Misssouri haben nicht schöne grosse Blumen, wie in Brasilien, sondern meist atzchen ^amenta~), also unansehnliche Blüthen, wenn man einige Arten von ih-n ausnimmt. Am Ufer zeigte sich seit langer Zeit zum erstenmal der Eisvogel. *egen 4 Uhr uach Mittag erreichten wir die schöne Hügelkette Uakän-Se-Uä n franz., u und ä getrennt), die Blacksnake-Hills und nahe dabei Roubedoux •"ading-House in der Nähe der Ayauä (Joway)- und Saki-Indianer. Die schö-, ü Hügel und die davor ausgedehnte frische Prairie prangten jetzt im lachendsten Q > auf den Hügeln mit ihren originellen Formen üppiger Hochwald. Die beiden r befindlichen Hänser sind weiss beworfen, wodurch sie vom Flusse gesehen in schönen grünen Umgebung einen freundlichen Anblick gewähren. Hinter den °önungen befinden sich an und zwischen den Hügeln grosse eingehegte Maysfel-¦ ' schönes Rindvieh weidete in der Ebene. Der Besitzer des Hauses, Herr bedoux und dessen Sohn waren jetzt abwesend, einige rohe Engages konn-daher meine Wünsche in Hinsicht frischer Provisionen und eines Besuches bei 0 benachbarlen Indianern nicht erfüllen, wozu ich von ihnen Pferde zu erhalten Schte.
