Show hatten so lange in dieser Wildniss zusammen gelebt, so Manches mit einander ge- theilt, dass wir natiirlich an dem Schicksale der in dem an Gefahren und Ent- behrungen reichen Winter-Aufeuthalte Zuriickbleibenden lebhaften Antheii nahmen und ihnen Muth und Ausdauer wunschten. Schnell glitt unser Boot dahin und in kurzer Zeit warfeu wir den letzten Blick auf das Fort und seine Bewohner, wel- chen wir das letzte Lebewohl zuwinkten. Nach einer halben Stunde erreichten wir die Stelle, wo wir mit dem Keelboat das letzte Nachtquartier vor dem Forte gemacht hatten, und der Steuermann wahlte jetzt den nordlichen Kanal, der uns um 2 ya Uhr nahe an der Ruine des alten Fortes vorbei fiihrte. Gegenuber der Miindung des Maria-River sahen wir einen Trupp von 8 Cabris, so wie deren mehre an anderu Stellen, auch Wildpret (Cervus virginianus) und mehre Vogel, besonders Elstern und Sperber (Falco Sparverius). Vorziiglich am Maria-River halten sich in den hohen Baumen mancherlei Vogel auf. Hier erlegte auch Herr Mitchill den Heher mit blauem Kopfe (1), welchen er auf dem Boden hiipfend antraf. Gegen 4 Uhr zog ein Gewitter auf und der Donner liess sich horen, der Himmel uberzog sich ganzlich. Da wir uns vor den Indianern in Acht nehnien mussten, so war die Bemerkung eben nicht angenehm, dass meine lebenden Baren . auf eine hochst ungewohnliche Art die Unzufriedenheit mit ihrer Gefangenschaft durch klagliches Briillen zu erkennen gaben, welches uns leicht einen feindlichen Besuch hatte herbei ziehen konnen. Vor der Dammerung legten wir an einer Prairie des rechten XJfers an, wo man eine weite Aussicht hatte, ziindeten Feuer an und kochten unser Fleisch, welches man alsdann zum Theile wieder einschiffte und die Reise fortsetzte. Als die Nacht vollig eingetreten war, befanden wir uns an hohen steilen TJfern der siidlichen Missouri-Seite und es war zu dunkel um noch weiter zu schiffen*, daher befestigte man das Boot an einigen Staramen und wir brachten die Nacht in sehr beschwerlicher Stellung auf unseren Kisten hin, wahrend ein starker kalter Regen uns vom Schlafe abhielt. |
