Mit der Fähre übergesetzt, erreicht man jenseit einen hohen dunklen, beinahe reinen Buchenwald, dessen starke Stämme durch ihren Schatten eine erfrischende Kühlung verbreiteten. Der Wald dauert unausgesetzt fort, aber die Buchen machen bald wieder den für diese Gegenden früher erwähnten Baumarten Platz. Wir legten die höchste Gegend dieses Weges zurück on" sahen malerische wilde Waldscenen, wo die hohen Baumkronen den blauen Hin"1*6 verbergen; noch nie hatte ich in Nord-America so schöne Waldungen gesefleI>' Am Abend hielten wir 23 Meilen von Mount-Pleasant in einem isolirten sehr ga" ten Gasthofe an, Horsit genannt, von guten Wirtschaftsgebäuden umgeben, in w^ einsamer Gegend. Wir waren erstaunt hier eine so gute Wohnung und Tisch *> grosser Reinlichkeit zu finden, und setzten am 14. Juni früh die Reise fort. Sec Meilen von hier erreicht man in einer Kalkstein-Gegend die kleine Town wo überall Kalkbrocken am Tage liegen, dann setzten wir die Fahrt eine Zeit längs des Litcreek fort. Einige Meilen von hier hält die Stage an, und die giere nahmen bei einem gewissen Chambers, einem Quäcker, das Frühstück ein# Diese Gegend ist sehr gesund, wie man behauptet, die Luft höchst rein, allein » das Kalkwasser inuss sich der Fremde erst gewöhnen. Wir sahen sehr Pferde in den Wäldern; allein diese Zucht soll in Indiana gegen andere noch etwas zurück seyn, doch hat man jetzt gute Hengste eingeführt und i merkte einige gut gebaute Pferde. In der Gegend des Blue-River waren Wälder schon weniger geschlossen, man bemerkte vorzüglich Eichen (Red-B*a Willow- oder Pin-Oak) auch die stumpflappige Eiche, dann erreicht man ^ offene gänzlich mit Scrub-Oak bedeckte Gegenden, wo der aus einem rothen T- bestehende Boden unfruchtbar seyn soll. Hier waren die stehenden Wasserp*ui tlinen von dem aufgelössten Thone gänzlich roth gefärbt Zu Greenville, einem Dorfe, trafen wir einen grossen Zusammenfluss der benachbarten Landleute Ute "^ Reitpferde und Wageu an den Zäunen überall angebunden standen.
