Wir hatten n d i Lt hatten sämm in in Europa, wohn c g , g unsere Einrichtung für die Reise mehr geordnet, und meine Leute hatten sämm ihre Plätze eingenommen. Der Steuermann Fecteau war ziemlich ungescbic ausser diesem hatte ich drei Ruderer, sämmtlich sehr mittelmässige Subjecte, lone einen Americaner vom unteren Missouri, den wir später kennen lern Bourguä einen Canadier, und einen alten Pohlen, der sich schon in der oa Welt umher getrieben hatte, und wohl noch der fleissigste von allen war. Nac» wir am Ufer gekocht und das Frühstück eingenommen, schifften wir bald nacn Uhr an der Butte carree vorbei, wo wir ein Rudel von 12 Elken sahen, so viele weisse Kraniche (ßrrm americana), Schwäne, wilde Gänse und Enten, &> welchen ich Anas Boschas, clangiila, acuta und mehre Arten von KrickeD fTeal") bemerkte. Um 13 Uhr erreichten wir den Heart-River in dem sich wärtig viele wilde Gänse aufhielten. Der Thermometer zeigte 61°. Gegen 3 legten wir bei Picotte's Winterposten bei den Yanktonaus an, nach welchem von Fort-Clarke so oft nach Fleisch gesendet hatten, fanden aber das Haus * lassen. In der Nähe befindet sich ein Teich, nach welchem unsere Jäger ausg1 gen, um Wasservögel zu schiessen. Sie sahen ein Paar Schwäne (Cygnv* °uC natorl, von welchen sie den einen schwer verwundeten, ohne ihn zu erba fiel'*' und brachten nur ein Paar Enten zurück. In der Nähe waren die Prairie-*1 gepaart, einige Spechte, Drosseln, Turkey-Buzzards und Raubvögel wurden bachtet. Als wir in der Dämmerung anlegen wollten, trafen wir am Ufer mit ei Rudel von 10 bis 12 Elken zusammen, welche zur Tränke kamen; allem ' d Thiere Rudel von 10 b \Vak meiner Leute schoss zu früh und wir bekamen keins dieser grossen Thiere. rend der Nacht trat heftiger Sturm und Regen aus Norden ein, am 30. AprJl das ganze Land mit Schnee bedeckt. Um 9 Uhr Morgens 35° Fahr. Wegen Sturmes blieben wir au der Stelle des Nachtquartiers liegen, und meine Leu t auf dem Ufer jedesmal ihr Feuer anzündeten, hatten au dieser Stelle in dem |
