Ehemals wurden alle Pfeilspitzen von scharfen Steinen gemacht; als Charbonneau nach dem Missouri kam? waren noch einzelne derselben von Feuerstein im Gebrauche, und in den Dörfern fand man sie noch, so wie man dergleichen jetzt noch überall an solchen Stelle11 der Vereinten Staaten findet, wo die verdrängten und ausgerotteten Urvölker ge* wohnt haben. In der Nähe der Mönnitarri-Dörfer soll sich in der Prairie Sandhügel befinden, wo der Wind eine Menge solcher steinerneu Pfeilspitzen blösste. Die Mandans und Mönnitarris haben jetzt beinahe sämmtlich Flinten (Ertibpa in der Sprache der ersteren), welche sie an den messingenen Pfeifen der Lade-stocke mit rothen Tuchläppchen verzieren, und an der Kolbe mit gelben Nägeln beschlageu. Ausser dem an dem Gewehre befindlichen Ladestocke tragen sie, wie alle Indianer immer noch einen besonderen langen Ladestock in der Hand, dessen sie sich gewöhnlich bedienen. Die Schiesstasche, Mänhä'-Ihduckä, ist von Leder oder Tuch, oft schön mit Glasperlen oder porcupine verziert, und hängt an einem Felle oder breiten starken Tuchstreifen von lebhafter Farbe auf dem Rücken. Ihre Streitkolben und Streitäxte sind von mancherlei Art. Manche haben einen dicken eiförmigen Stein an einem Stocke befestigt, mit Leder überzogen, oder auch Leder, siehe den Holzschnitt, andere haben kleine eiserne Streitäxte, Öhmanat-Tchamahä imanat schnell «n kurz, ch guttural), wie man ein Beispiel auf dem Portrait des Matö-Töpe (XIV. sehen kann, jedoch nicht Tomahawks mit eiiier Pfeife daran. |
