Er wird von zwei Männern des Dorfes nach dem Flusse geführt, dort angezogen und bemalt. Man streicht ihm den ganzen Körper schwarz an, und er redet nun kein Wort mehr. Auf den Kopf setzt man ihm eine Mütze mit eiuem schwarzen Hahnenkamme; vor das Gesicht erhält er eine Maske mit hölzerneu weisseu Ringen um die Augenöffnung. Dann macht man ihm grosse Zähne vou Baumwollendocht, malt ihm eine Sonne auf den Magen, den halben Mond auf den Rücken, an jedes Gelenk der Arme und Beine einen weissen Cirkel oder Kranz in- und auswendig, heftet ihm dann einen Bisonschwanz an? und giebt ihm in die Hand einen kleinen Stock mit einer Kugel von Fell am Ende, woran ein unten roth angestrichener Scalp befestigt ist. Die Kugel soll den Kopf eines Feindes vorstellen. Wenn dieses Ungethüm vollendet ist, lässt man es los und es läuft nun wie toll in der ganzen Prairie umher, kommt in das Dorf, steigt auf die Hütten, von einer auf die andere, und fährt in allen Winkeln umher, während die Bewohner ihm allerhand Dinge von Werth als Geschenke auswerfen. Sobald er dieses bemerkt, wendet er sich zur Sonne und giebt ihr durch Zeichen zu verstehen, wie gut man ihn behandele und sie sey thöricht so weit entfernt zu bleiben-Er geht herum und sucht den Leuten das Ungeziefer vom Kopfe. Findet er solche Thiere, so stellt er sich sehr glücklich und rennt dann heftig umher. Vor dem Ochkih-Häddä oder Teufel haben die Indianer grosse Furcht; aus dieser Ursache kann man diese Rolle niemand zutheilen, sondern wer sich dazu hergeben will? muss sich selbst melden. Der ErzäLIer setzte hinzu, einst habe man dieses Mede-eine-Fest am Heart-River gefeiert, wo die Mandans damals noch wohnten, und den Mann in den Fluss geführt, der diese Rolle übernommen hatte. Als man ihn ausgezogen hatte, um ihn zu bemalen und anzukleiden, gab er grosse Unruhe zu erkennen und verlangte, man solle ihn loslassen, und als dies geschah, war er w*e vom bösen Geiste besessen, rannte pfeilschnell, wie ein Pferd, auf die Hügel und in der Ebene umher.
