Show 67 besuchte die Dorfer wahrend des Winters zu Schlitten. Die Ereignisse, sich wahrend der 37 Jahre von Charbonneaus Anwesenheit in den Wrfern der Monnitarris und Maudans zutrugen, sind etwa die nachfolgenden. Charbonneau hieher kam, bestanden die drei Monnitarri-Dorfer gerade wie , und er bewohnte sogleich das mittlere derselben. Noch war keine Handels-communication mit St. Louis eingerichtet, mid Charbonneau als einzig anwesen- weisser Mann, bezog seine Bedurfnisse aus dem Norden von den Englandern. Jahre seiner Ankunft griffen etwa 13 bis 1400 Dacotas, vereint mit 700 das erste Dorf der Mandans an, und es eilten etwa 1000 Monnitarris fetzteren zur Hiilfe herbei. Man schlug die Feinde und todtete ihnen mehr als 100 Mann, unter welchen sich auch der Sohn der weissen Kuh (Tanahah-Tahka), eines Chefs der Arikkaras befand. Vorher lebte dieses Volk in der nachsten Waldspitze unterhalb derjenigen, welche jetzt im Winter von den Mandans von Mft-Tutta-Hangkusch bewohnt wird5 sie zogen aber nach dem genannten Gefechte i am Missouri hinab und erbauten ihre Dorfer an der Stelle, wo wir sie ge- haben. Ihre sammtliche Habe hatten sie nach obigem Gefechte in den Hiitten zuruck gelassen. Sie kehrten seitdem noch ofters feiudlich zuruck, doch nie in solcher Anzahl als damals. Fiinf bis sechs Jahre vor Charbonneau's Ankunft kamen 1500 Zelte der Dacotas zum Besuche in die Nahe der Monnitarri-Dorfer. *^ Paar dieser letzteren, Mann und Frau kehrten von den Crows zuruck und warden von einigen Sioux getodtet, worauf die Monnitarris funf zufallig bei ihnen befindliche Dacotas todteten, welches das Signal zum Kriege war. Die Sioux schlos-sen das Dorf ein, so dass die Bewohner weder Wasser noch Holz bekommen k°nnten, da der Fluss etwas entfernt ist. So blieben sie 9 Tage enge eingeschlos- Wahrend der Absendung eines ansehnlichen Trupps von etwa 60 Mann mit Waaren nach den Gebirgen, entstand ein Missverstandniss mit der Nation der Crows, die ihnen an 150 Pferde nalunen und die meisten Waaren pliinderten. Nur einige schlechte Pferde gaben sie ihnen zuruck. Solchen Widerwartigkeiten sind die Handelsleute in diesen Gegenden, selbsfc bei friedlich gesinnten Indianern unterworfen, und es &t diesen alien bei der leichtestea Beleidigung nie zu trauen. |
