Show 138 ren mannichfaltigen schweren Arbeiten herrührt. Die Indianer behaupten, dass die Weissen einen üblen Geruch haben, weil sie den Körper selten mit Wasser reinigten. Ihre Nägel lassen sie gemeiniglich lang wachsen, und in Hinsicht des Ungeziefers sind sie höchst tolerant, wovon der starke Haarwuchs und sogar die Bisonroben sehr sichtbare Beweise liefern. Den Weissen scheinen diese Insecten nicht sehr gefährlich, wenigstens sind wir immer davon verschont geblieben, während wir in naher Berührung mit den Indianern lebten. Sie suchen sich wechselseitig diese kleinen Gäste, essen sie, und die Männer erhalten sie zuweilen von den Weibern zum Geschenke. In Dipäuchs Hütte zu Mih-Tutta-Hangkusch gab die Frau, welche die kleine Jagd auf dem Kopfe ihres Knaben ausübte, die ausgezeichnetsten Stücke dieses Wildprets ihrem Manne auf der flachen Hand, und dieser verzehrte sie mit Wohlgefallen. Die angenehmen Gäste von den Köpfen der Weissen essen die Indianer nicht gern. Gewandt und abgehärtet sind die rohen Bewohner der Prairies in hohem Grade. Sie baden sich in der grössten Kälte des Winters im Eiswasser und gehen alsdann unter ihrer Bisonrobe am Oberleibe nackt. Schwimmen ist eine Hauptbc schäftigung, und dies geschieht schon in früher Jugend. Ich habe schon früher erzählt, dass ich alle diese Nationen nach der Art schwimmen sah, wie die brasilianischen Tapuyas, welches auch andere Schriftsteller bezeugen*). Reiten »ü* dem blossen Pferde und schneller Wettlauf werden häufig von ihnen geübt*, sie sin'» dabei vortreffliche Bogenschützen. Alle ihre Sinne sind ausserordentlich scharf und geübt. Wie unter den meisten nord-americanischen Iudianerstämmen, so bestehen unter den Mandans und alleu Nationen des oberen Missouri gewisse Banden oder Vereine (Bandes der Franzosen), Gesellschaften, die sich durch äussere chen und Gesetze von den übrigen unterscheiden und zusammen halten.
