Das Dampfschiff lief zu Fairport, Achtabula und Salem ein, Wo eine Menge von Fledermäusen über dem Hafeneingange umher flogen. Bei Weiterer Fahrt zerbrach während der Nacht die Maschine und wir erreichten erst aB* folgenden Morgen (37. Juni) Dunkerke, einen kleinen Ort mit holländischer Bauart, welcher in dem Ohio-Gazettier vom Jahre 1833 noch nicht aufgeführt ist. *^ö Leuchtthunn ist an der nahen Landspitze erbaut. Um 11 Uhr hatten wir in "er Ferne schon die Ansicht von Buffaloe am Ende des Sees, und waren hier beugen eines Wettlaufes (Race) zweier grosser Dampfschiffe. Wir näherten uns Büffaloe, wo eine Menge von Dampfschiffen ein höchst belebtes anziehendes Gemälde darstellten, indem sie mit bunten Flaggen geziert bei uns vorbei strichen. Um 13 ^"r legten wir am Landungsplatze von Buffaloe an. Buffaloe ist eine seit kurzem in bedeutender Zunahme stehende Stadt, weichein heilig Jahren ein ansehnlicher, bedeutender Ort seyn wird. Sie hat jetzt schon etwa *OOO Häuser und 13,000 Einwohner, und verspricht einer der wichtigsten Handelsplätze des Landes zu werden. Der Erie-Canal, der die grossen Landseen mit den Wichen Seehäfen der Union verbindet, nimmt hier seinen Anfang. Die benachbarten alle des Niagara ziehen ebenfalls in den Sommermonaten eine Menge von Frem-en hieher, welche sämmtlich Buffaloe besuchen. Die Strassen der Stadt sind meist regelmässig, rechtwinkelig sich durchkreuzend, breit, enthalten viele schöne Ge~ aude von Backsteinen, ansehnliche Gasthöfe, 9 bis 10 Kirchen und Bethäuser, reiche Läden und Waaren-Ausstellungen aller Art.
