Show 420 Verdecken, von welchen das obere mit einem Zelte von Leinwand überspannt war. Das mittlere Verdeck hat eine Länge von 80 Schritten, der untere Raum enthielt drei höchst elegant möblirte Cajüten, die beiden hinteren für Frauenzimmer, und vor diesen befand sich die grosse Cajüte, wo man speiste, mit Oelgemälden geziert-Die Dampfmaschinen standen auf dem Vordertheile des Mitteldeckes etwa #5 »lS 30 Fuss hoch; sie hatten zwei Schornsteine uud am Steuerrade waren 4 Mann an-gestellt. Unser stolzes Schiff strich gleich einem Vogel den Fluss hinab, uDd schnell schwanden die schönen Ufer dahin. Nachdem etwa 30 Meilen zurückgehe waren, erreichten wir den Ort Hudson, gegenüber den Catskill-Mountains*)* eine10 malerischen Gebirge mit schönen Kuppen, wie man sie in Nord-America se selten sieht. Diese Kuppen zeigten sich gegen den heitern Himmel im schönste" Blau, und oben an der Höhe bemerkt man aus der Ferne ein Haus. Man ne°n dieses Gebirg auch die Catsbergs. Ihre höchste Höhe befindet sich in der Gege0 von Greene, 8 bis 10 Meilen vom Flusse entfernt. Am Ufer vor diesen BergeI1 liegt das Dorf Catskili am Catskill-Creek, der durch dasselbe in den Hudson fliesS Hier landeten wir und nahmen Passagiere ein, die als Wahrzeichen jener höhere Gegend, von welcher sie herabkamen, grosse Büschel von schönen Kalmia-Blutu in Händen trugen. Der Ort, hat etwa 350 Häuser und 5,000 Einwohner. Ansicht der Catskili-Mountains ist einem jeden Landschaftsmaler zu empfehlen- Mehr abwärts von hier haben die Uferberge in ihrem Character viel AebnUc keit mit denen der italienischen Schweiz; frisch grüne Plätze wechseln an inn mit Nadel- und Laubholz ab; unzählige kleine Segelschiffe, besonders Scbooi liefen schnell auf dem Spiegel des Flusses bei uns vorbei, der noch einmal so br ist als unser Rhein, auch viele Dampfschiffe (unter ihnen der colossale Cbamp n wo «ich *) Die Catskill-Mountains betrachtet man als das nördliche Ende des Alleghany-Gebirges, von ^t_ dieses etwa 900 Meilen weit bis Florida ausdehnt. Sie liegen etwa 130 Meilen von New - oJite tfernt. Der höchste Punct der Catsfeill-Berge (s. Warden 1. c. Vol. I. pag. 28.) oder der soge^ ^ Bound-Top soll 3,804 Fuss über dem Meere und 3,015 über dem Fusse der Berge erhaben sey > High-Peak 3,718 Fuss. v |
