Show 393 gekommen, gleitet mau auf dem schönen dunkel braunen Spiegel durch frisches Grün dahin, wo Wald und Wiesen abwechseln, und die hohen Tulpen-, Wallnuss-ünd Sassafrasstämme ihren malerischen Schatten in dem schönen glänzenden Wasserspiegel zeigen. Die Schleusen, deren man so eben auf eine Entfernung von 2 % teilen 21 zählte, entfernten sich nun wieder bedeutend von einander, und man ^reicht den Fluss Cayahoga, dem der Canal bis zum See Erze hinab folgt. Das Dörfchen Old-Porfage ist das erste, welches man auf dieser Fahrt erreicht. Es legt auf einer grünen in den Waldungen ausgehauenen Fläche, rundum von schö- Waldhügeln umgeben. Breitblättrige Asclepias und die Phytolacca trieben jetzt in die Höhe, hatten aber ihre Blüthen noch nicht entwickelt. Einige Meilen Leiter befand sich eine Steinmühle, wo man Schleifsteine aus Freestone machte. **s ist hier dieselbe Gebirgsart, die man schon jenseit Chillicothe beobachtete, die a»er bei der Stadt Akron ein gröberes Korn zeigt. Am Morgen des kommenden Tages waren wir nur noch 5 Meilen vom See fJe entfernt, ein Raum, den wir gegen 10 Uhr zurückgelegt hatten und uns dem Stehen Cleveland näherten. Der meerartige Spiegel des grossen Erie-See's "drascht nicht wenig, wenn man aus den waldigen Thälern heraustritt, und sera iblick erinnerte mich an die schon herannahende Seereise nach dem Vaterlande, unkelblau dehnt sich der See am Horizonte aus, wie der Ocean, wo das Auge eisse Segel und den Rauch der Dampfschiffe gewahrte, während das schönste fetter und der klarste Himmel diesen Eindruck begünstigte. Cleveland (Cliveland) ist eine bedeutende, sehr in der Zunahme begriffene adt, von mehren Tausend Einwohnern, voll Leben, Handel und Gewerbe. Sie egt in Cayahoga oder Cuyahoga-County, ist zum Theil auf einem erhöhten Rücken, Udi Theil unten am Flusse erbaut, und ihr äusserer Theil ist zerstreut, der Haupt- ei* hingegen in geschlossenen Strassen angelegt.
