Alle ausgezeichnete Thaten, welche durch eine Kriegsparthei vollbracht werden, kommen dem Partisan zu gut, alle genommenen Scalps gehören ihm*), ebenso die erbeuteten Pferde. Der Mann, welcher einen Feind tödtete, ist ein Tapferer und zählt einen Coup; allein der Partisan steigt dadurch am höchsten, und wenn er auch selbst keinen der erlegten Feinde gesehen hätte. Kommt er nach Hause, so versammeln sich die alten Männer und Weiber und singen ihm den Scalpgesang, worauf er ihnen allen Geschenke von Werth machen muss. Alle erbeuteten Pferde und andere Gegenstände von Werth giebt er weg, er ist nachher ein armer Mann; aHein sein Name ist gross. Glückliche Partisane werden nachher Chefs, die bei ihrer Nation in Ansehen stehen. Schon mit 14 bis 15 Jahren gehen die jungen Indianer in den Krieg. Im Winter ziehen sie bisweilen zu Pferde aus. Die Mandans und Mönnitarris streifen bis zu den Rocky-Mountains gegen ihre Feinde die Schipsi ([BlackfeeQ. Gegen die Ojibuäs streifen sie bis in die Gegend von Pembina**) • Ihre übrigen Feinde sind die Hahä-Numankosch oder die Saonn (Dacotas), ferner die Arikkaras, die Höhsika (Assiniboins), die Tamah - Onruschkape ***) (Chayennes)-Mit den Hähderucka (Crows) haben die Mandans Friede, so wie mit den Mönnitarris. Die Waffen der Mandans und Mönnitarris sind nachfolgende. Zuerst der Bogen, Woraerühpa, und die Pfeile, Manna-Mahhä. Der erstere wird von Ulmen oder Eschenholz gemacht, da man hier keine andere gute Holzarten hat. Gestalt und Grosse sind wie bei den übrigen Nationen, die Schnur besteht aus gedrehten Thiersehnen. Häufig ist der Bogen an seiner Vorderseite mit einer breiten Thiersehne beleimt, und die innere Seite deckt eine Schiene aus den Hörnern des Bighorn oder Elkhirsches in ihrer ganzen Länge. Die Engländer schreiben nicht Chayennes wie die Franzosen, sondern Shiennes, sprechen diesen Namen aber 0 aus als die ersteren. |
