Show I 80 Werke enthalten mehre, allein es ist gewiss noch viel hier zu thun übrig, besonders in der Kette der Black-Hills. Auch in botanischer Hinsicht haben diese Missouri-Gegenden ihren eigentümlichen Character. Die Landspitzen, welche in die Wendungen des Flusses hinein treten, sind gewöhnlich mit Wald bedeckt, seltener auch andere Stellen des Ufers und die hier vorkommenden Baum- und Straucharten sind schon früher erwähnt worden. Den Hauptbestandtheil derselhen bilden die hohen Pappeln (Populus angulata (Liard der Canadier)), und ausser den Bösen QRostQ dem Cornus, der Symphoria, Prunus padus virgin., Amelanchier, den Buffaloe-Berries (Graines de boeuf)*)> der Clematis, kleinen Weinranken (Vitis) und einigen andern, findet man hier mehre Arten von Currants [Ribes'), so wie den kletternden Celaster {Celastrus scandens) und den Hopfen (Humuhis). Die Ufer des Flusses decken nebst den Pappeln besonders auch die beiden Weidenarten, Salix longifolia und lucida, und an nackten Hügeln wachsen Juniperus re-pens und communis, dem europäischen ganz ähnlich. Nadelholz QPinus) giebt es in der Gegend von Fort-Clarke nicht, man muss etwas höher aufwärts reisen, um dergleichen zu finden, eben so wenig kommen Birken (BeluliQ daselbst vor, welche mir auch an dem ganzen Laufe des Missouri nicht zu Gesicht gekommen sind. Sie finden sich erst, wenn man den Seitenflüssen des oberen Missouri, z. B. dem Knife-River bis auf 3 Tagereisen aufwärts folgt, am Fusse der daselbst befindlichen Gebirge, die man unrichtiger Weise La cöte noire nennt, obgleich sie mit den Black-Hills zusammen hängen, also nur ein Zweig derselben sind. Diese letzteren bilden eine interessante Bergkette, welche ziemlich in nordöstlicher Richtung vom La Platte und des grossen nördlichen Bogens des Missouri fort läuft. Sie liegen etwa 100 Meilen östlich von den Rocky-Mountains und bilden die Wasserscheide zwischen dem Missouri, Missisippi und Arkansa, indem in ihnen mehre *) Eia sehr komischer Druckfehler hat sich bei diesem Namen in Brackenridges views of Louisiana pag. 233 u. a. a. Orten eingeschlichen, wo es öfters lieisst statt „grame de boeuf" - „graisse de boeuf." M kennt übrigens hier noch eine Species oder Varietät dieses Strauches mit weissen Beeren CWld loe-Beri'ies). |
