Da dieser Vogel ein neues Genus zu bilden scheint, so nannte ich ihn nacb der eben angeftihrten Eigenschnft Gymnorhinus. Gymn. cyanocephalus: Beschreibung. Schnabel ziemlich gerade, stark, etwas langer als der Kopf, Firste sehr sanft gewOlbt und ein wenig kantig erhaben, Rander der Kiefer glatt und ohne Spitzenzahn; Kinnwinkel brcit, an der Spitze ein wenig abgerundet, sparsam und kurz befiedert, Fliigel scbmal und lang, % der Schwanzlange erreichend, zugespitzt, die 3te Schwungfeder die langste; Schwanz in der Ruhe scbmal, an der Spitze sehr sanft abgerundet, aus 12 Federn beste-hend; Beine gebildet wie an Garrulus; Ferse stark, mit 8 glatten, sehr von einander ab-gesetzten Tafeln belegt, an ihrer Sohle gestiefelt und kantig zusammen gedruckt, Nagel wie an Nucifraga. Far bung: Obertheile und Seiten des Kopfs sehr schon glanzend in-digoblau, Backen heller und schtfner glanzend; ganzer Kdrper des Vogels bleifarben, him-melblau iiberlaufen, besonders an Schultern, Brust, Schwung- und Schwanzfedern; Unter-theile mehr bleifarben, dabei heller gefarbt als die oberen; Federn des Riickens mit etwas braunlich beschmutzten Handera; Kehle weisslich; Schnabel und Beine schwarz. Ausmessung nach einem Balge: L. 9' 10"; L. des Schnabels Cdes Oberkiefers} 13//<r; L. des Fliigels 5/y Tu\ L. des Schwanzes 4" 4//y; Hohe der Ferse \&"\ L. des Hinternagels beinahe 5//y. 2) Nur ein Paar Worte iiber diese wichtige Thierart, welche bis jetzt das westliche Nord-America ernahrt, will ich hier beibringen. Man hat den americanischen Bison fur identisch, oder doch sehr nahe verwandt mit dem noch jetzt in Russland lebenden Zubr oder Wisent angesehen; allein nach allem, was ich von dem letzteren kenne, scheinen mir beide Thierarten vollkommen verschiedene Species zu bilden. Der americanische wilde Ochse ist hochst characteristisch durch seine vollig constante Behaarung und Farbung. Sein Kopf ist sehr gross, wird niedrig getragen, der Hals ist kurz, der Widderist sehr hoch erhaben, der Vorderleib colossal und breit, der Hinterleib verhaltnissmiissig schmal und schwach, der Schwanz ziemlich kurz, sehr glatt und kurz behaart, und mit einem verlangerten Haarbiischel oder Puschel am Ende. Eben so characteristisch ist die Behaarung des Thiers, die wahrend der Sommermonate beinahe der eines geschprenen Pudels gleicht. Kopf, Hals, Schultern, Vorderleib und Vorderschenkel bis hinter die Schulter-blatter sind langer behaart und hier hort diese langere Behaarung scharf begrenzt auf; der ganze iibrige Korper ist sehr kurz und glatt behaart. Die Stirne und der Oberkopf haben 12 bis 16 Zoll lange schlichte Haare, eben so lang sind sie an den Vorderbeinen, wo sie bis auf die Mitte der Schienbeine herabhangen. Kopf, Hals und das lange Haar der Vor-derbeine sind schwarz, die Schultern und Vorderblatter gelblichbraun, zuweilen mehr oder weniger dunkler oder heller, jedoch seiten, der ganze iibrige kurz behaarte Ktirper ist schwarz braun.
