Show 23 ganzlich schwarz von Farbe. Im Winter ist das Haar des Hinterleibes etwas Ian-ger, mit dichter Grundwolle. Die Kuh zeigt nie die regelmassige Verliingerung der Haare des Vorderleibes, wie am Stiere, auch sind ihre Haare am Kopfe nur unregelmassig buschig, aber nie lang herab hangend, die langen Haare an dem Vorderbeine und der Stirne fehlen ganzlich, sie ist dabei bedeutend kleiner. Neben der Brunstmthe des Stiers stehen vor den Testikeln an jeder Seite zwei gepaarte Zitzen dicht neben einander, ihre Gestalt ist lang-«ch schmal und zugespitzt. Die Fahrte des Bison ist colossal und durch das Gehen an den steilen Hiigeln sehr stumpf abgerundet. Sie ist wenigstens 5" 1' breit, und 5" 4'" lang. ie Afterklauen sind kurz, breit und etwas dreieekig, auseinander stehend; das Vorderbein »st sehr dick, vom Knie abwarts kurz behaart, die lang herab hangenden Haare des Vor-derschenkels sind am Knie immer abgenutzt. Die Abbildungen, welche man von dem jetzt noch im Walde von Bialowieza existiren- en Wisent oder dem Zubr der Polen gegeben hat, zeigen dieses Thier sehr verschieden von dem americanischen Bison. Bojanus Figur CTab. XXI.J zeigt den Kopf eines 6jahri-gen Stiers ohne alle lange Haare, eben so Tab. XX., wahrend bei dem americanischen rhiere die Stirnhaare 12 Zoli lang sind, und der Bart lang herab hangt. Die Vorder-scnenkel zeigen an den genannten, so wie an anderen Abbildungen ebenfalls keine langen Haare, dagegen ist der Schwanz auf dem grossten Theile seiner Lange an Bojanus Ab- udung viel langer behaart, als am americanischen Bison. Eben so ist es mit alien mir bekannten Abbildungen des russischen Wisents. Sie alle zeigen weder die starke Behaa- ung des Vorderleibes, noch die scharfe Abgrenzung dieser verlangerten Behaarunff von dem librigen Kdrper. Man hat von dem americanischen Bison weisse und weissgefleckte Exemplare, doch sind dieselben nicht haufig. Von einer Rasse mit seidenartigen hdchst feinen Haaren, welche im Sonnenschein wie Biberhaar glanzen und schillern, wnrde mir haufig erzahlt. lissgeburten mit zwei Kopfen oder mit mehren Beinen will man auch schon unter diesen liiieren gefunden haben. Die Bisonkuh wirft gewohnlich nur ein Kalb, doch findet man ausnahmsweise auch zwei. Im Winter suchen diese wilden Ochsen die Walder und Ge-ousche, im Sommer dagegen sind sie in den offenen Prairies zerstreut. Gezahmt hat man oen Bison schon Ofters, jedoch soil er zur Arbeit nicht besonders gut zu gebrauchen seyn. Ian reitet den Kiihen in der Prairie nach und fangt alsdann leicht das Kalb, welches an- anghch stossig ist und ausschliigt, bald aber, wenn es sich verlassen sieht, den Pferden nachliiuft und sehr schnell zahm wird. Man soil Bastarde von ihnen gezogen haben, vom ^ ausstier und der Bisonkuh, die sehr stark und tapfer waren, und alle anderen Stiere ab-^ i ugen. Ein recht grosser starker Hausstier soil aber den Bison besiegt haben.
