Show 358 ten Flusse mühsam aufwärts schiffte. Wir erhielten durch den alten an Bord befindlichen Roubedoux Nachrichten von St. Louis. Dieser Mann hatte von der Für-Company das Trading-Hause an den Blacksnake-Hills, von welchem ^J gegenwärtig herkamen, für 500 Dollars gekauft, und gieng jetzt dorthin zurücK« Ein Halt, welchen wir in der Nähe des Dampfschiffes machten, gestattete «n Mittags 12 Uhr, bei einer Temperatur von 89° Fahr, eine kleine Waldexcursion> die mir die schöne rothe Natter, (Coluber coccineus) einbrachte. Ihr schön un zierlich geringelter Körper hat zur Grundfarbe ein etwas ins bräunliche fallend Zinnoberroth, ist also nicht so rein zinnober- oder siegellackroth, als die prachlvo Corallennatter von Brasilien. Der Wald war mit den früher erwähnten Raupen un ihren Gespinnsten dergestalt angefüllt, dass seine Betretung dadurch sehr nehm gemacht wurde. Gegen 5 Uhr Abends liefen wir Grand-River vorbei u übernachteten 6 Meilen unterhalb desselben am südlichen Ufer bei einer zung, deren freundliche Bewohner mir bei dem. besten Willen nur wenig mittel ablassen konnten. Der schöne uns umgebende Wald bestand aus Eieß Walluussarten, Ulmen, Eschen, Ahornen, Sassafras, Gleditschien, Cercis, Heimbuchen u. a. Arten. Wildpret, wilde Truthühner und verschiedene Arten Eichhörnchen (Sciurus rufiventris und cinereus) kommen hier noch vor. ( In der Nähe von Little-Arrow- Rock sahen wir am 33. Mai zufällig einen mA# sto lossalen weissen Katzenfisch fangen, dessen Gewicht sehr bedeutend seyn na° leider konnte ich hier nicht Halt machen, um das Thier näher zu betrachten, vernahmen hier ein sonderbares Knurren unter dem Boote, und meine Leute sicherten, es werde von dem von ihnen Casburgot oder Malacigan (Catast Carpio JLes.'), und von den Anglo-Americanern Buffaloe genannten Fische uu nen Stachelflossen hervorgebracht. Dieser Fisch erreicht ein Gewicht von ^ Pfund. Am Abend schifften wir bei Franklin vorbei und legten unterhalb Boon an.
