Die beiden in das Fort gebrachten Bären beschäftigten die India- r sehr, und stets hatten sich viele derselben um jene Thiere versammelt. Die ame in der Umgebung des Forts hatte schon ein leichtes Grün und verschiedene IQe frühe Gewächse blüheten; ich bedauerte sehr, nicht so lange hier verweilen können, um die interessante, einige Tagereisen von hier gelegene Gegend zu ' uchen, welche man ebenfalls Mauvaises Terres nennt. Herr Laidlow hätte sie im vergangenen Winter besucht, und gab mir eine Beschreibung derselben. der legt zwei Tagereisen von Fort-Pierre in südwestlicher Richtung, und bildet in ebenen Prairie eine Anhäufung von höchst merkwürdig gebildeten Hügeln, eche Festungen, Kirchen, Dörfern und Ruinen ähnlich sehen, und wie die Figu-öer Stone-Walls, auch ohne Zweifel aus demselben Sandsteine bestehen. Auch Ort febt das Bighorn in Menge. 27. April besah ich die Stores (Vorräthe) der Für-Company, wo für Dollars Waaren vorräthig Jagen. Am Nachmittage trafen Jäger mit 20 ein, welche 20 Tage auf der Bisonjagd abwesend gewesen waren und eine Pferdsladung mit Fleisch zurück brachten; die dabei befindlichen Leute aus wie die Wilden. Ich unternahm am Nachmittage einen Spaziergang in rairie, obgleich meine Kräfte noch nicht vollkommen hergestellt waren.
