Show 423 schönen Wasserbeckens bei der Stadt liegende Packet brachte. Der Anker ward Ner schon gehoben und der Pilote befand sich an Bord. Sobald das Gepäcke der verschiedenen Reisenden in den Bäumen des Schiffes untergebracht war, zog der «avre alle seine Segel auf; allein der Wind war bei grosser Hitze zu schwach. 11 Uhr befanden wir uns gegenüber dem Leuchtturme von Statenland, das zur Rechten lag, die Batterien von Long-Island zur Linken. Nicht weit von lag das Liverpool-Packet, welches heute ebenfalls nach Europa abgehen sollte, seine Passagiere erwartete. Da der Wind bald gänzlich ungünstig wurde, so less man den Anker fallen und zog die Segel ein. Mehre Dampfschiffe liefen bei üns vorbei, von welchen wir bugsirt zu werden wünschten; allein sie hielten sich nicht auf. Gegen Abend erhob sich ein wenig Wind, man Iavirte langsam dem ^eere zu. Ein Havre - Packet, der Francis Depau lief neben uns ein, welches Tle'e europäische Auswanderer an Bord hatte, sein Fore-Topmast war abgebrochen, wichen er in einem Sturme verloren zn haben schien. Um 6 Uhr des 17. Juli lagen wir gegenüber Sandy-Hook, etwas aufwärts 68 Leuchtturmes, der Wind war sehr schwach, nahm jedoch später etwas zu. ^ach yzi% uj,r sanen wjr Fire-Island-Lighthouse links in der Ferne, welches Meilen von Sandy-Hook entfernt ist, und am 18. hatten wir die Küsten aus ni Gesichte verloren. Unsere Reise gieng nun abwechselnd gut von Statten, bald 4 starkem frischem, bald mit schwächerem Winde, der jedoch sämmtlich meistens §unstig Wai% Wh überschifften auf dieser Seereise nicht die von dem Golfstrom W*ulfstream) aufgehäufte Bank von New-Foundland *), sondern befanden uns am *4. und 25. Juli weit südlich von derselben. An letzterem Tage flog eine ameri-CanJsche Schwalbe an unser Schiff.
